Saving Throw Proficiencies
How does it work?

For example a rogue has dexterity & intelligence as saving throw proficiencies.
Does it mean that the higher the ability scores in dex/int are the better the defense?

It just means that you get to add your proficiency bonus to those saves. Ever class gets two saving throw proficiencies when you take it at first level (so you can't get more by multiclassing).

So the abilities don't play into it?
They still do, your proficiency just gets added on top for those saving throws.
Doesn't mean you should focus on them though, at least not always. Dex, yes. That's a rogues main stat.
Int however, most rogues don't care too much about. Only arcane trickster rogues have int scaling.

Well yes, the higher the stat the better the save, regardless of proficiency. Proficient saves add your proficiency bonus to them too so they get a little bit extra. The most common saves you'll see are dex or wisdom based, but mind flayers throw a lot of int saves so you'll likely run into a good chunk of those in the mid to late game. It's not the most important choice but yeah, proficient saves = add proficiency bonus which raises naturally from leveling to the save number
For most saves you get to add the relevant ability modifier to the roll. For proficient saves, you also add your proficiency bonus.

Your character has a proficiency bonus that starts at 2 and caps at 4 at level 12. Your abilities affect saving throws regardless of proficiency, but if you have saving throws for that ability, your proficiency bonus is added to it. So with 14 con you'd have +2 to constitution saving throws. With con saving throw proficiency, you'd have +4 to +6.

Thanks for the clarification, I think I get it now.

Thanks everyone! :)

They do, which means dumping a stat (making a stat 8 to put those points elsewhere) means you will have a -1 to skills, ability checks and saving throws for that stat; keep that in mind if you dump something like wisdom (you will get frightened/charmed a lot) or dexterity (taking full damage from AoE spells, getting hit by traps, etc).

I totally gonna Highjack this topic.

But do classes get their saving proficency by default? I Play a socerer and reach level 4 and it lets ne select the "Resilient" feat and I can still select Charisma

yes by default, so you get probably nothing from that particular option
