150gb SSD required?
I have deleted what I can, and was able to get 124gb of space on my SSD, will I be able to download since it's 122gb, or do I have to have 150gb? Not sure how steam works.

It needs to download the package and store it somewhere while it unpacks it, so might want to free up a bit more space if possible. Also drives generally like ~ 10% free room on them to function properly.

Have you got the EA version installed? If so, can get rid of that as well.

Could I download it on HDD drive and transfer/swap it to the SSD? or does the transfer/swap also require the full 150gb?

Unfortunately, the space on your SSD will not be sufficient.

You need - in addition to the 122 GB for BG3 - another 80-100 GB of free space on the SSD, for example to be able to use the Windows update function without problems.

Most probably you 'll need those 150 GBs because of the files decompression. Don't tell me about it. I' ll have to buy an external SSD just to play this game...

Time for a larger SSD, luckily their prices have been dropping for some time, so you could get a 1tb SSD for very little these days.

You might get away with it but as noted previously it's dicey. Make more room if you can.

Alternatively, people have said they were able to play with it on an HDD without much issue. Your results may vary.

Early Access and Full Release aren't two different clients. Uninstalling EA is the same as uninstalling the game - it doesn't free space for the full game, you're just uninstalling the game altogether.

with how SSD's work (NAND has lifetime write limits) filling them to capacity is rather detrimental to their life time. they do have a small pre-allocated buffer of sorts to help them not die in a matter of weeks if you filled them to capacity (that's why a 500gb ssd only has like 465gb of usable space)

modern drives are better than they used to be but its still not great for general longevity and performance of an SSD to fill it to and use it at capacity.

Are external SSD's viable for gaming?

as my external dedicated steam drive for years and its fantastic (and easily transferable to other PC's :)

Running an SSD full to the brim is a great way to lead it to an early death.. SSD's always need a certain amount of free space to ensure it stays healthy for many years

The boyz down at the Larian forum of BG3 have an entire thread going about it. The conclusion is that if you have a newer USB port (3.0 or better), the external SSD will do the job fine!
