Have you got the EA version installed? If so, can get rid of that as well.
Could I download it on HDD drive and transfer/swap it to the SSD? or does the transfer/swap also require the full 150gb?
You need - in addition to the 122 GB for BG3 - another 80-100 GB of free space on the SSD, for example to be able to use the Windows update function without problems.
Alternatively, people have said they were able to play with it on an HDD without much issue. Your results may vary.
modern drives are better than they used to be but its still not great for general longevity and performance of an SSD to fill it to and use it at capacity.
Are external SSD's viable for gaming?

as my external dedicated steam drive for years and its fantastic (and easily transferable to other PC's :)
(cheaper on amazon)
DLC and mods for ultra 4k textures coming soon
The boyz down at the Larian forum of BG3 have an entire thread going about it. The conclusion is that if you have a newer USB port (3.0 or better), the external SSD will do the job fine!
