I *was* going to buy BG3, until I read this
"174 hours of cinematics".

Now, I understand that this does not mean 174 of cutscenes, but it does mean 174 hours of dialog trees. Who thinks this is fun?

I play strictly multiplayer games and my wife and I have tried other story heavy games in multiplayer and it NEVER works. The fact is, reading is NOT a multiplayer experience. For a single player game, sure, but for multiplayer dialog trees are fatal. Let alone 174 hours of them.

Next.

LOL @ the replies here. Ok, first, I enjoy a good story, but I don't enjoy having to stop and read it in the context of a game. Plenty of games in 2023 have figured out how to tell a story with voide-overs, for example, and not require the player to stop and read text on a screen, as if we were still playing DOS games.

Second, I am very familiar with RPGs and D&D derived RPGs with story elements. I loved Planescape:Torment and played both the original BGs as well as Icewind Dale. But I hated the experience of having to stop and read screen text. Happily, many devs have figured out how to avoid this anachronism in 2023, these guys apparently have not.

Finally, our marriage is not "spiraling downward" lol. We are hardcore gamers who love our lives and our games, but we also enjoy well crafted games that take advantage of modern technological advances to move their stories forward. Reading hours of dialog trees is not our idea of a fun multiplayer gaming experience.

That is all.

I don't think you are allowed to have an opinion here. People have decided they like cut-scenes and rather than jog on past your post, they all have to tell you that you are wrong or the game is wrong for you - but you can't be wrong because that's what you like/don't like and you already figured out the game is not for you, because of it.

Then they'll let you 'So why did you need to post about it?' - because it's a forum and you are allowed to.

Seems a bit of a precious community.

Sounds like story driven games are not you and your wife's cup of tea. I have a 4 player game for Thursday and none of us can wait.

Maybe go play overwatch 2 or the halo campaign?

You're clearly not an rpg player then if that bothers you. Good day sir, better luck somewhere else.
Every dialogue of you talking to another character is "A cut-scene"

And they're also talking about every variation possible. You'll never experience the full catalogue of possible cut-scenes in one playthrough.

Not to mention game length is only bad if the game isn't enjoyable and the content isn't meaningful. I've spent 128 hours playing just what is available in Early access and enjoyed every minute of it. You can be sure i'm gonna play the hell out of the full game.
174 hours of cinematics in a "real rpg" means that you would watch 40-60 hours in every different gameplay.

Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.

Well, it is a multiplayer game. For example, you could play as a paladin, then switch to a companion, initiate a conversation, do something untoward, and nothing will happen to your paladin's oath. Devs expect you to switch companions like this, too, because only the speaker rolls skill checks in conversations.

174 HOURS OF CINEMATICS?? can i at least take a bathroom break inbetween???
It's 174 hours of cinematics across the entirety of the game's content.
Your wife read faster than you?
D&D has always been about telling a story.
174 hours is more than the entire HBO Game of Thrones series.
If you don't like narrative, then to quote Tyrion Lannister:
"You've come to the wrong place."
174 Hours of cinematics that's a rookie numbers try again peasant
are you sure you like rpgs or even played one before ?

a game like this reacts to you and your choices
youll never see all of them in a run
