Yes, and you can even start it without having Steam running.

At that point might as well have a 'guest client' that users can download to 'join' a host's game but not allowed to have their own custom avatar. Like those co-op games where it's split screen but the use of a special separate client helps with more better netcode than streaming a game.
UPDATE:
Baldur's Gate 3 is now available for me to play using library share-- It might just be finnicky since the game just released, I do suggest either giving it some time or restarting Steam a couple times.
use koallageddon to play family shared games with each other using the advanced notepad option

I think you probably *can* use Steam's Remote Play together feature to play coop on one copy, as long as you're okay with it being split screen. You could in Divinity 2 anyway.

*Play game in offline mode, other uses family share, use direct ip connect.

When I try this, as the offline player when I use direct connect it simply takes me back to the main screen, and doesn't load the game up. Any idea why this is.
So with family share you have two different steam users on two different machines and play BG3 together at the same time when only one of the two users owns a copy of the game?

That's not what https://store.steampowered.com/promotion/familysharing seems to suggest.

> Can two users share a library and both play at the same time?
> No, a shared library may only be accessed by one user at a time.

We have restarted steam several times, logged out, revoked sharing, and started sharing all over again. Still unable to play in family share mode.

You can't play together with family sharing, only one of you can.

that would help others who are looking up the answer for the question
which is a simple "yes"
For 2 players, yes, you can own just one copy to play multiplayer across the internet:
- Player 1 (owner) plays in Steam offline mode: Go to Multiplayer, LAN, Create a game, enable "Direct Connection", and share the join code.
- Player 2 plays online using Family Shared library of Player 1: Go to Multiplayer, click Direct Connection, and enter the join code.

(Note that P1 needs to log into P2's device to enable Family Sharing beforehand, if you haven't already).

For 3-4 players, you will need at least two copies, since only one person can be using the Family Sharing online at a time:
- P1 (owner), P2 (using P1's copy online)
- P3 (owner), P4 (using P3's copy online)

any luck on this? I saw one person report it worked fine, but no further confirmation or steps used to get it to work. I have family sharing library turned on, on both my computer and wife's computer on the same network. But after I installed BG3 on my PC running from her steam account, as soon as I sign back into my steam account on my PC, it only gives me the option to PURCHASE rather than stream or run from my PC, like I can with other shared library games.

It's worth noting that I'm not trying to play multiplayer, I just want to play it from my PC when the wife isn't playing it.
