I wouldn't recommend this unless he has a ton of notes saved to catch you up on the five levels of events that you missed. Or if you're okay with missing swathes of the game. Imo, you should have SP saves for yourself and MP saves for friends.
EDIT: To clarify, I mean they should make their own singleplayer campaigns if they're going to play without you and switch to a multiplayer story when you're playing with them or you'll be left in the dust more or less narratively.
But I want to play with them so I just play when I can with them and if that means I miss out on some stuff in their run that is totally fine by me for full on story I have my SP run, it was just important for me if I would not be able to play for whatever reason and want to jump back in if my character might be to weak to still play with them because it might not level with them while I don't play. But if that is not the case there is no problem.
So far I did not feel like that, you can talk to all companions and get to know them better, some story parts of them trigger, like I had a specific one with Gale or Wyll and the other players can watch your dialogue sometimes the attitude of the companions also changes depending on who of you speaks with them because of your background, class etc.
