while bards can do good damage in later levels their main draw is to elevate the party with various buffs or debuffs for enemies
so yeah you may not be the strongest but youll elevate the rest of your party to reach new heights that wouldnt be possible without a bard
bard is very versatile and fun to play
wouldn choose bard for solo play though
bg 3 is a party game so "you" are basically 4 chars
Bards are usually pretty support/utility oriented. If you insist on playing without allies, that's not a great choice, you want somebody who will influence combat more directly. Though I'd strongly recommend not soloing the game until you're comfortable with the game, this really isn't that sort of adventure.
*not sure what you meant by soloing, assuming you mean single player but still playing with origin characters.
Very versatile, can do most things themselves, but as others have said, they are mostly support in combat, not major damage dealers.
Also, the bard specific dialogue options were often quite fun.
Pros
- Charisma makes them an excellent face
- They are one of the best skill monkeys in the game
- They get almost all of the social spells in the game (speak with animals etc.)
- They are the strongest counter-speller in the game (Jack of all Trades adds +2, and you get to see what spell you are counter-spelling in BG3)
- A Lore Bard is the strongest crowd-controller in the game, subtracting a 1d6 - 1d10 to an enemies saving throw using Cutting Words as a Reaction
Cons
They do low "consistent" damage unless you multiclass. Common one's are Warlock 2-3 for a decent Eldritch Blast cantrip and Pact of the Blade, Paladin 2-6 for tanking, smiting, and Extra attack, or some Sorcerer metamagic and better evocation spells.
If you're not familiar with games like this, I'd still recommend having a party of friends though. Someone has to appreciate the sweet tunes, after all.
(Trying to solo on your first run if you're not great at crpgs is probably not going to be fun, but bards are a very neat class in 5e D&D)
I am in a personal Holy Crusade to kill every bloody bard that I 'll meet in-game. Enemies, allies, doesn't matter...I just hate the bastards

If you are Sin Tee you can solo with any character. If you want something broken, this man is your best resource.

They are really good in DnD 5e.
