From my understanding the main storyline is meant to be broken and messed with. Part of the charm of this game is to feel like an AUTHENTIC DND EXPERIENCE. Which usually means the players ignoring the DM's story and killing important NPCs and being dummies.
Killing Shadowheart results in you getting her MacGuffin.
In the DoS games you can kill essential NPC's. It just ruins your game.
