What race best compliments a Druid of the Moon?
I've decided when I play through the game, my custom character will be a Druid of the Circle of the Moon. I'm curious what race would best be paired with that.

I'm not familiar with DnD rulesets so any input is appreciated. The more detailed the better.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Are there any races specifically to avoid, instead of pair with? I'm not trying to optimize min max or anything, I'm more just curious what synergizes well with a shape-shifter, or what I should avoid because it's a waste, redundant, etc. I'm not too familiar with how DnD works so I'm pretty ignorant to it.

The game does not in the slightest require you to build an optimized character. Simply pick the race that looks or sounds coolest to you and you will be fine.

Whatever you think is fun/looks cool. Unless the full game is harder than what we've seen in EA, you really don't need to be perfectly optimized to be successful.
Wood elf and forest gnome seem obviously well suited to it thematically, but there's nothing stopping you doing whatever you want if Dragonborn druid seems cool.

As a reply to your edit, I don't think there's any that really wouldn't work with it. in same cases you lose out on some of the racial bonuses, like you can't use the dragonborn dragon breath racial attack if you're shapeshifted. But other than things like that there shouldn't be any "bad" options.

The most common picks : Wood Elves, Forest Gnomes, potentially Half-Elves raised in elven communities, especially those of Wood Elves, Humans, potentially Halflings though rarer, and, of course, Lizardfolks and other races with tribal themed aesthetics.

On release they are removing ability modifiers that are tied to race. So besides flavor and appearance, check the racial traits if you want to optimize. The big things I look for in a race is if they have darkvision or will I need to provide light somehow, do they get inherent spellcasting, or if they simply have forest or wood in their name lol.

Seriously tho, Forest Gnome gives you both Darkvision and Speak with Animals which is a TON of fun in Larian games like BG3. Wood Elf is just strong but the subraces attributes just give you more movement and proficiency in stealth and have nothing to do with Druid things. If you don’t care about the Darkvision from Elf then you might as well be a Lightfoot Halfling instead of a Wood Elf.

If you want to build something around a story you can create a peaceful half-orc that has a garden in Baldur’s Gate and RP to your hearts content. Really create whatever you want!

I enjoyed playing DND with a Half Orc Circle of Moon Druid so I will be biased and say Half-Orc.

I am also planning to play a moon druid on release, so I have done a lot of theory-crafting.

Depending on how the racial traits and ability scores are balanced at release, I am leaning towards elf or maybe dwarf.

Elves get free perception proficiency and resistance to charm and sleep magic. In terms of sub-races for elf, (which are essentially just a set of bonus features) wood elves get faster movement and high elves get a free cantrip; so a lot of cool stuff.

Dwarves get some neat stuff, too. Poison resistance can be helpful. I'm not sure what the crafting is like, but the tool proficiency could come in handy. The bonus HP from hill dwarf will likely be wasted, but mountain dwarves maybe get an extra ability score point.

I would say Half-Orc, but I am skeptical that their feature that leaves them at 1 hp will trigger while in animal form.

All their features including more damage dice when doing a critical hit will trigger, despite being in bear form you are still a Half-Orc.
