No, the sneak attack feature specifically says attacks made with melee weapons with the finesse property or ranged weapon attacks. A spell attack is not a weapon attack so no sneak attack with spells.

No. Sneak attack has a "requires a light (finesse) weapon to be used"

Not a light weapon. Just a finesse weapon. Light and finesse are not the same. A hand ax is a light weapon that is not a finesse weapon and a rapier is a finesse weapon that is not light.
You're correcting him. only to tell him that he's right. Good job.

Not in DnD, but there is a rogue feat in Pathfinder 2 that does exactly that.

No, I I corrected OP to say that spells cannot be used to sneak attack and I corrected Seven by pointing out that light and finesse are different weapon properties.

And in Pathfinder 1. A level 10 arcane trickster can sneak attack with spells. Chain Lightning as an opener with sneak attack damage added? Yes please.

Does that mean there is no point to playing arcane trickster in BG3? Sneak attacking with spells is kinda the big draw of AT.

I don't know if it is possible in Bg 3. The arcane trickster is cool.

If you've been sneak attacking with spell attacks as an Arcane Trickster in table top (aside from spells that specifically make a weapon attack as part of the spell, like Booming Blade), then you've been doing it wrong.

The draw of AT is the using of spells to compliment and buttress your skills as a rogue.

Magical Ambush is a lvl 9 AT ability and is different from sneak attack.

the big thing with 5e is each caster can only concentrate on one spell, if this is implemented in BG3, having the rogue buff/debuff is the bonus. At 9th level you can force disadvantage on saving throws increasing the chance of getting spells like hold person to work, or buff them selves with blur.

I've never played table top, only played AT in NWN2 and WotR as a sneak attacking spellcaster.
