This, the way it's set as a tag made me think they'd let you choose backgrounds, but weirdly this was never added to EA.
Also, some characters- drow, for instance- aren't treated as being from BG even in the EA version if memory serves.
Perhaps they wanted it to play a larger role later and needed more time to implement the special cutscenes/dialog options. Just easier to update the EA stuff with similar stuff already in that build then add the new content into EA builds.
At least, that is my hope that not being from baldurs gate will be a benefit. I can see Astarion being snarky that we don't know who or what Cazador is/rules and have to explain it like we're 5.
It could be you were born in baldur's gate, but then chose to leave for the wilds to live on your own until the game starts.
I'm guessing it's a EA restriction though, hopefully lol.
