I dont know if its works as well in a group of 4 (ai might act differently), but its easy doing it solo.
Stealth is fun outside of the turnbased mode (pickpocketing, avoiding looks), but the AI has trouble coping with stealth in the turnbased mode. It does not the reasonable thing, and scout around at least. That would make it harder to find a good cover spot.
yeah definitely needs some fixes although hide will be a full action in the full release so that is already a big difference there.
Then my stealth archer is immediately exposed, making stealth pretty useless for that type of attack. That swings the balance in the complete opposite direction.
Better is to have the ai act more dynamically, or have a higher chance to be exposed.
The AI for example could estimate the location of the attacker, and try to scout this position. In this case the player needs to actively change cover positions.
People have been asking for that since the beginning of EA because that is actually what it is in Table Top so is Shove., they are both full actions on table top.
that being said rogues can get hide as a bonus action later (level 2) atleast in table top so rogues may get it anyway.
Tbh rogues are objectively the best class in D&D 5e.
- They have the best class economy (aka. Actions per turn)
- Rogues do Stealth and Stealth is just rewarded with Advantage to hit and Perception checks to be able to be hit.
- Eventually they can halve all damage with the measly cost of a reaction. Resistance to all types, basically busted.
- Great synergy for multiclassing. Pick 3 levels in rogue and you can't go wrong (see 1.)
Overall the stealth attacks are fun, and using hide as a bonus action is kind of necessary for this attack-loop. Its really more a problem with the AI not coping with the situation.
I think Solasta is better about it. They managed to make ambushing strong but the AI will look for your PCs without being cheap about it, plus they have more circular vision which means you can't pull as many cheap tricks. It's still strong when used properly, but with BG3's current mechanics, stealth is really powerful.
I could easily clear fights well beyond my level and go for lots of fights without resting by cheesing the stealth mechanics. (Unless they fix it for the full release)
