Fast "can solo the entire act 1 with just stuff off the floor but feels the need to grab companions for story"
(I joke, more or less agree with your post but trying to keep an open mind for launch. Every media franchise needs to have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Marvel Avengers cast of protagonists now)
I wish they got rid of the origins and had a normal player made party that could just interact with the world and stuff. origins feel forced and crappy.
In other words, you "don't" need any of them. it will be possible to ether solo the game or hire mercenaries and there is the Co-op work around to have one more totally customizable party member.
With Gale and Astarion you can have a clear picture in EA if they will annoy you.
First one you meet, complete ♥♥♥♥♥. Frog faced ugly ♥♥♥♥♥. I'm going to leave her in the cage or kill her in release.
Second one you meet (most likely), Shadowheart. Annoying still but the best of the bunch in EA, IMO.
Third one...EL OH EL. How has this not been redone? Dude tries to rob/kill you and 1 minute later he's invited to your party? Makes perfect sense. Larian devs would be murdered by hitchhikers in the USA. I'm killing this guy when I meet him if they have not redone his intro.
Fourth one, eh dude is ok, I am just not a huge fan of Wizards. Interesting back story.
Fifth one, I love Warlocks but his story in EA did not make a lot of sense. He is supposed to be some kind of badass and he completely isn't.
Those are all the ones I recruited in EA.
Those that were tied to the main plot had much more depth with the exception of one or two well known companions (edwin where you at) whos entire existence was to fill out your party.
In BG3 THESE CHARACTERS ARE FORCED ON YOU worse than imoen was and to the point they are plopped in the world for the player to find after 5 mins.

They are not "forced" on you. Some of them, you can remove permanently from the game by killing them. Don't try that with Gale however. :P
I get that its a shared problem, but the people you share the problem with seems like you died and went to hell and are trying to survive.....
There will be the option to piss him off enough, he will leave your camp. I may have to go that route with him if he shows up in my camp to annoy me in Act 2. Any dialog with him, just pick anything which will tell him no or you disagree with him. Might work.
But I do agree with your point about Gale. It's bad game design to have him blow up and wipe out your party. Dumb, dumber.
There's an option when the interaction event pops up where you can just leave him in the full game.
