I think people are just obsessed with being unique. Once we started accepting that you're more than just your gender, people got upset that they weren't different enough anymore. Suddenly being a man wearing a skirt didn't mean you were a rebel anymore, so you needed another way to stand out. In comes "nonbinary"! Now I'm so different, that everyone has to constantly use special words and grammar any time they even refer to me! I get to be acknowledged as different and special everywhere I go!
Also you have to do it or else you're obviously a monstrous bigot.
No one thinks it's 'cool' it's just a silly phase some children are going through. It is called nonbibby, and it doesn't necessarily mean gay but it probably is gay.
