I actually quite liked gale in my last good guy run, but I have to say a companion should never be forced on a player in these games.

if you can't avoid Gale entirely without it ending your game, there is no if or buts about it, that's bad writing.

There are some really obvious items to feed Gale
The Staff of the Crones and the Amulet of Selune's Chosen and he is good for act one.
The Amulet heals for maybe a single digit of hit points (Fextralife says 1d8-1) and may send someone to sleep, it is okay on elves because they are immune to the sleep, but it is a pitiful amount of healing. The Staff of the Crones can cast Ray of sickness at will which does 2d8 poison damage to both the victim and the user of the staff, it is okay if you play a fiend warlock (because of the temp HP) with resistance to poison (either via a ring or natural poison resistance), but let's face it, if you are playing a fiend warlock, Eldritch Blast with agonising blast is probably better, and definitely is when you hit level 5 and get two shots.

Or just stay away from the way point after you meet Astarion, presumably he deals with the situation on his own in the same way as if you don't fix his problem in camp

This lore has changed on the main Baldur's Gate III site.

In the new lore, Gale tried to usurp Mystara's godhood, and Mystara cursed Gale by taking Gale's magic (not the most powerful wizard anymore) and putting that thing in Gale's chest that'll kill not just Gale but scores of people, too. It says that Gale learned the lesson long ago and now seeks a cure to save everyone from the devastating curse, possibly regardless what happens to Gale in the process, but the site is not completely clear on how self-sacrificing Gale is willing to be.

Honestly... nothing about Gale appeals to me. He's kind of a smug, insufferable, manipulative jerkass who thinks he's far more charming than he is. That he literally eats your magic items and low-key forces you to put up with him or he'll nuke you off the face of the earth don't really help make him more endearing.

Maybe he was just way worse in earlier patches and therefore the hate?, but he has been giving me good advice and has given me a couple of good laughs during my EA play-through

Honestly, I feel like the devs can read the forums and search through them to see "Gale" related content... the game was years in early access. YEARS.

My first play through during EA, I didn't like Gale and I didn't need yet another spellcaster. More recently, I included him in a party and sure the guy is opinionated but he had some good stories and the writing has improved. Literal changes have happened to Gale over the course of the EA. With full release...? I don't know. He will still likely be made with pure smug but that is why I am going to multiclass him into enchantment wizard + lore bard. Give the diva a fighting chance and throw useless items his way!

Would be interesting if each of the Origin story chars are a god in flesh. That why we don't remember thigns and the dark urge play is one of the really really evil gods....

I still want to know if you do the Dark Urge thing on his hand do you recruit Gale with one less arm?

In my current play he tries to eat the Necro book you need the gem for (don't have the gem yet) and I did feed him a certain palidin sword after I killed them for a future Origin Char you meat in EA but will be in the finish game. So yah there are a lot of things you can feed him. Think it needs to be a blue border item maybe.

They should had done the same with Gale as they did with Wyll and redone his story. At the very least not be forced on us as a companion.

Would had prefered if his whole bomb deal was a joke and he was just power hungry for items as some sort of Elf with a magic addiction.

There's a lot of magic items that are quite not useful and are better to be sacrificed to him, or let him do his thing. You can always ignore him just do not kill him at all.

i'd rather sell the not useful magic items and use that money to buy useful magic items instead of feeding them to Gale
