i know charisma determines your hit chance with spells but what determines the hit chance with melee weapons, charisma again? strength?

However if you're playing melee as warlock you'll probably go pack of the blade at level 3 which lets you use charisma for everything

im testing warlock right now but unfortunately pact of the blade isnt in EA, it was what i was gonna do in the full game but i dont understand exactly how it works, you summon a pact weapon? do you have to summon it every fight, or if you bind a existing weapon how does that work, bind it with a spell you have to cast every fight?

We don't know exactly how it works because it's only been loosely teased in an interview and they're modifying the rules. In tabletop it's a permanent summon so you won't have to continually re-summon it - at most once a day.

My recommendation is to have your Charisma at least to 16. I would try to get Dexterity as high as you can for Armor Class. The AI likes to target low AC units if it can. After that, Con for health.

the one im running right now is 12 12 12 12 12 16, thats what im gonna go for at release too, at lvl 4 ill take longsword proficiency, unless i can get that with pact of the blade in full release, at 8 im thinking cha to 18

I usually go with Dexterity, because not only it improves your light weapon attacks, it also increases your armor class, making it a superior ability compared to strength in my opinion.

14 dex is a really good idea so you get +2 AC in medium armor. there's not much point in having strength as a warlock and wisdom and int are only for saving throws and skill rolls. you will appreciate more than 12 con if you're planning to be in melee range and you want as much AC as you can acquire

Use strength for weapons, or dexterity for finesse weapons like rapiers, daggers etc.

You can go strength builds with feats for better armor use (recommend a dip into fighter for a level or two to get Heavy armor proficiency, second wind, action surge and a fighting style to help your melee side out. This does come with a downside being giving up Lifedrinker as an invocation at lv 12.)

If you go the Dex route, you can get a pretty high AC by adding decent light armor, get a good to-hit with your finesse weapons, and if you take the Defensive Duelist feat, you can add your proficiency to your AC as a reaction, keeping you in the melee fights longer by potentially denying an attack each turn with a +2 to +4. Assuming a magic light-armor exists with at least a +2 and a Dex of +4, you can have a pretty respectable 18-20.

Pack of the Blade doesn't give you CHA to attack or damage rolls, nor do most of the official invocations. PotB makes your chosen weapon magical for overcoming resistance and immunity to non-magic attacks, and allows you to conjure the weapon in cases where its taken, acting as an extra-dimensional space for your chosen weapon.

Specific PotB Invocations include: Thirsting Blade (an extra attack each turn), Eldritch Smite (1d8 force damage + 1d8 force damage per spell slot level burnt), and Improved Pact Weapon (Your weapon is now +1, unless it is already +1 or higher, and can be used as a spellcasting focus).

Lifedrinker is the invocation that grants you extra necrotic damage based on your CHA on melee hit, but it requires you to be level 12. By the time you get that high, yeah its a +5 damage each hit, but unless your warlock has a very powerful non-artifact (and non-sentient) weapon made into his pact weapon, everything kinda falls flat since the max level is 12, and you will be right at the endgame by the time you get it.

This does go without saying that we don't know what Larian is going to add in homebrew-wise for each class, so they may add in something along the lines of Lifedrinker-lite etc as a passive illithid power, new warlock passive or as its own invocation.
