Spell - Plane shift. Each rider would need to be able to cast it or have an item that does. Could also be Gate, which is a big portal to anywhere you want usually.

I wonder if it's something their leader or God can do or if they have a bunch of gith wizards behind the scenes.

My question is why they even have riders. Some lvl 5 humanoid douchebags even significant when mature red dragons are doing 95% of the work?

if i remember right dragons are pretty intelligent but maybe these are still young and require a rider to direct them

Because as powerful as they are, they're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ huge. Even adolescents like those. And we saw how much effect fire breath had on the ship.

Having a small partner to jump into the hole you punch and surgically ♥♥♥♥ up everything inside is going to be a huge boon.

So the red dragon is like a ranger and the gith rider is his pet attack dog. Got it!

The gith live on the astra plane between worlds.
They have master the art of planer travel.
The mostly stick to the astral plane as it is there home.

The red dragons have an agreement with the gith.
In exchange for serving as a mount for a few centuries they get vast amount of dragon hoards.
Also i think it is a deal between vlakith and tehamant.
A god and a god in the making.

As for how they know.
Gith hate mindflayer with a burning passion that block out suns.
They are the reason mind flayers hide.
The gith are always looking for mind flayers.
Tho there where a lot of dead mind flayers in the cutscene and lea'zel so meaby they already fought it but it manage to flee.

The gith are a very advance spieces mostly held back by a holy war between 2 groups of giths and a compleet disinterest of other races.

Think of it like this.
An enemy aircraft carrier is attacking some unimportant city.
These contain a race that enslaved yours for thousents of years and would glady do so again.
What would you do?
You send specialized hunters to kill it ofcourse.
Remember how duty focus lea'zal is.
Imagine a race all as rigid as her.
You think the slack of on there holy mission to kill every last mind flayer?
