Can you upcast thunderous smite?
Has anyone played a paladin recently that could answer this question? I'm planning a multi class for release, and I would like to know if the 2d6 is as high as it scales. I realize I could play till level 5 and see myself, but I don't want play Act 1 again so close to release.

You cannot, sorry.

Smite spells really should be used for their effect, not their damage, though. If you want maximized damage, use Divine Smite, which DOES scale with the spell slot level you use.

i will take his word for it. i dont actually remember if you could ever upcast paladin smites. it does seem like something that would make sense, but I guess the idea is "since divine smite scales, you dont need the other ones to scale, because otherwise the damage would be too OP"

From my time sampling Paladin in EA, I don't recall seeing an option to upcast the other elemental Smite attacks - just Divine Smite. To be honest, they don't really need it. The extra effects like knocking somebody prone or inflicting fear mean they still have use cases even as you start unlocking higher level spell slots.

Thanks for the response! I figured as much.

I wanted thunderous smite to scale for synergy with the tempest cleric's channel divinity. I thought it would make for a pretty cool flavor over divine smite.

That would indeed be pretty cool, though with a hefty cost in terms of multiclassing, unfortunately.
