Okay, I give up. What the **** is a Tav?

I'm usually pretty good at figuring out what strange insider terms mean when I lurk in a new community, but this one is flying right over my head. Is it *just* a custom character? The forums way of saying "PC" or "MC" or "toon"? Or is it more specific than that? And where did it come from? I've literally never heard it on any other RPG forum or on any social media.

Tav is the default name the custom character you make has, if you never change the name.

Tav is a custom character. Full blank slate that players can make whatever.

The Dark Urge is a custom origin character who has amnesia but is constantly dealing with unique dark urges that other origin characters and Tav does not.

Then there are the origin characters who have set-in-stone backgrounds.

"Tav" is just the default name of the custom character you start with.
Until you change it. Or not.

Ah, okay. I only ever played the game right after EA launched 3 years ago, so that explains why I never noticed. Thanks for the answer, I was about to have a minor crisis, lol

Like others said, it's the character's name in Canon lore. Just as Abdel Adrian was the canon character of BG1 and BG2.

I understand it very well! There is a lot of people around using the letters "bs" it look likes it means something bad and i'm just pretending to understand it for 3 years.

Also, Tav is short for Gustav, codename of development build. And name of Vinke's pet (don't remember exactly species).
You can see "Gustav" in up right corner of stream from PHF in monk showcase for example.

I once made a full custom party and forgot to rename any of them... it was hard to sort invontory when its all SEND TO TAV xD 4 Tav walk into a bar amiright? lol

It's the default name of the player character regardless of gender. A lot of people trying new stuff as it came out through EA forgot to name their character so they were stuck with the default.

It's like Daniel being the name of the Daemon Prince in WH3. You give a default name, it's canon now. (Especially if other people are like me and jump right to attributes, class, appearance, etc. and forget to actually change the name before launching the character)

In all fairness the "name" bar is small and not noticeable hidden amoung the other stuff, I have forgotten it many times this is why some games make it big and noticeable and often right next to the NEXT option so you see it before continuing lol
