Im sorry but if I hear him slowly saying "Ceremorphosis" one more time, then so help me god...
A tier: Gale, Karlach
Z minus tier: The rest
Wyll tier: Wyll
Wyll is pretty much your typical hero, good guy that wants to do good things. Biggest issue with him is that the only real interesting thing about him is his patron rather than his own backstory. I can see him working as the Main Character if you didn't create a custom character as he has the highest Charisma so he'll be doing the talking for the party.
Gale - C
Gale is your goofball of the group but hides a secret until you get him to open up. Guy is full of himself and if you believe his backstory, I guess you could say he earned the right to toot his own horn. Only thing I don't like about Gale is that he seems a bit manipulative in that he wants you to do all these things for him and yet does the minimalist of efforts to help out. Controlling him in combat not withstanding.
Shadowheart - B
Her story seems interesting enough and the potential to see what is really going on with her does make her seem more than she is. She also seems like she'd effect the story the most seeing as how the game pretty much throws her at you unless you kill her off. Just not into her choice of Cleric Domain.
Lae'Zel - D
Comes off very rude and can't do anything on her own and yet believes she's better than everyone and only her way is correct. A problem with her upbringing but the fact that she doesn't even realize how useless she is without the others is something I don't like about her character.
Astarion - D
Don't really feel strongly against or for him, he's kinda just there. If it wasn't for his vampire background he'd be the least interesting character of the bunch.
Gale is mega sus and his relationship with Mystra seems interesting.
Lae'zel is the most plain from all of the companions, but not in bad sense. She is actually the most truthfull and "straight to the point" kind of person. I think she will have the biggest change of character in the game.
Wyll was the most boring character of the bunch and I'm glad he got rewritten.
I have grown to like Laezel because she is a straightforward no-nonsense woman. And maybe it is just my impression but I feel that she is not as evil as it seems. There were moments in the dialogues when I felt that she is simply not accustomed to dealing with people in a friendly manner. Or even to having friends. So I admit I put her on the first place mostly for my personal impression, not so much for her story, so far.
Last place - Astarion, he is kinda funny, but i've sense nothing interesting behind him. The only thing why he could be interesting it's because of his master vampire lord storyline. It feels like DOS2 demon doctor side quest, there could be great side boss, but other than that idk..
Wyll - if he is being reworked - then fine, N/A
Laezel - she is wholesome, i will take her in my party, because i'm interested in how would my MC dragonborn interact with other dragon riders from her tribe.. and her's questline might have surprises.
ShadowHeart - she is classic. Just classic in good old way. 'SHE IS FULL OF SECRETS'. I like her very much.
Gale - now for him. He is very much my favourite of all them. Mbe because im still in love with wizard/sorcerer/mage archetypes like Anders from DA1(awakening)/DA2. He is reminding me of Anders A LOT. And all who knows, they know, you can only love and hate Anders, one can't live without another - so here goes Gale, he is okay, but he can be much better - and i have high hope for his story and his impact on main story.
For partywise i will most definetely be tempest clerik lightning dragonborn - so i need Laezel, ShadowHeart, Gale. I know that we will get others like Minsk(if i can recruit him, then he will replace Laezel), Karlach(meh, another vengeance story, but her personality was decent) , Jaheira(mbe replace for Gale, idk), Halsin ( i loved halsin's character - very standard, nevertheless nice one)
That was my choice for First playthrough, for second most definetely will be LONE WOLF with mods on TACTICIAN hard mode.
2.Gale
3.Lae'zel
4.Shadowheart
5.Wyll
Yes I like them toxic why do you ask
1: Gale. A good character who is capable of acting in a really egotistical and dangerous way towards himself and others, but for a very humane trait - curiosity.
2: Shadowheart, IF her plot twist is interesting. She has potential, like any character without memories, and her link to the cult of Shar makes her pretty central and capable of more interactions/exposure.
3: Astarion. I don't like his arrogant/aristocratic and overly secual part a lot, but of course the whole traumatized ex-slave story can be a huge storytelling device.
4: Lae'Zel and Wyll. Yeah, Lae'Zel supposedly will understand how she was always fooled by her queen and Wyll could have interesting links to Avernus, but I feel they are the more plain and boring. Larian seems to think Wyll is interesting but was poorly portrayed tough, so they are remaking him for act 1, hopefully he ends up more interesting in release.
but from favorite to less favorite as of now i'll go with
Laezel (very interested in her story and how its gonna change her)
shadowheart
astarion
wyll and gale are tied at the bottom.
S: Shadowheart because I am a straight guy and because sex. Also, shes the only dedicated healer you get right off the bat. Also, her story seems like its going to be important to the main story. She also has the personality type I find very attractive on a personal level.
A: Minthara because, also, sex. But, she's a little too aggressive and you can easily screw up in the dialogue options with her. Currently we dont know what her story is, but we know shes a Paladin which will be very good to have in a party. Shes also rather on the dark side of things like Shadowheart. He personality is a bit much, but, I like her, shes like the more extreme version of Shadowheart.
B: Halsin because he's a druid, which means he can be a healer, or a tank, and hes an ultra chad which is incredibly based and swol brothers respect swol brothers. I might even put him at an A but i'm just not sure yet, afterall, we've only had 1 interaction with him and I have no idea where his story is going to lead, if he even has one.
Karlach might go here, i'm not sure. we know basically nothing about her and I have no idea how she'll be in combat. She seems like a great replacement for Lazel. Shes cute but definitely masculine. Lots of HP and high strength is always fun to play. Also I think they wanted to make her "your favorite companion" so i'm sure she'll be the opposite of Laezel in personality. Tieflings are also just really cool. I think I would've preferred her to be slimmed down and just be a Fighter or Ranger, that would've made her A tier for me.
C: Gale. To be clear, Gale could be a B. The reason is because I like his personality, kind of. He's difficult for me to care about initially, but I think its because his stupid robes make him look like a beta simp He's the opposite of ultra chad Halsin. Also, his spells always fail, and he always dies first no matter what. He seems just useless. So. If I can get him a nicer outfit to make him look more like a man, and get him to stop failing every spell and get him to stop dying when someone sneezes on him, then i'd make him a B. But currently, he's C tier. Also his story while extremely interesting...Is...kind of an L for us.
D: Astarion and Wyll. I do like Astarions personality, but I dont care for his appearance very much, I would've liked him with longer hair, make him a long haired sexy vampire man, that would be great. Him being a rogue is an L for me because I dont think steath works very good in this game, as you either exploit and win too easily, or it fails because the interaction is wonky. I just dont like its implementation, idk. For me, Rogue is bad. His story as a vampire is very interesting though, so, if I can respec him to a Gloomstalker Ranger i'd definitely put him to C tier, and if I could get him some more attractive hair i'd make him B tier.
As for Wyll, he has no personality, and hes a melee warlock without a hexblade subclass. So, for now, theres no interest in Wyll. But they reworked him all together so I think Wyll, for me, so if they made him more personable I could elevate him to C tier because Warlock is a great class.
Laezel is here too. I mean. Possibly C tier. The Gith seems to be part of the main storyline, and her being a strong melee character is definitely good, I always use her in my party because shes reliable, in fact, shes the most reliable person besides Tav. But she is rather insufferable and I don't think the pay off is worth it, because so far, there is none. As far as importance to the story and reliability in combat, she's easily one of the top companions. I'd put her at C tier overall. But right now i'm leaving her in D tier because i'm going to have to pick between her and Shadowheart and it will always be Shadowheart.
The other companions I dont know anything about.
For my criteria I considered
Combat viability/usefulness
Storyline synergy to the main plot
Personality
Appearance
Gale/Asterion are very much liked or very much hated
