You will become an Oathbreaker if you:

In general, going back on your word and betraying those you have convinced not to attack you will break your oath.

Examples of this include betraying the Tieflings when rescuing Lae'zel, betraying the goblins within the Blighted Village as well as the Shattered Sanctum.
Allowing Arka to kill the caged goblin Sazza.
Torture Liam at the Shattered Sanctum.

You were playing a character who is portraying a knightly person, someone who is meant to keep their word, act honorably, defend others but not try to be a violent murder hobo, etc...

Break those types of things, guess what? Oath Breaker. Kinda makes sense to me.
Don't like that, Ancient is more about just being a generally good individual and seems to have less strict restrictions.

yea if you were playing tabletop(IRL dnd) you'd have way more options to get around situations like that. sadly its a game and uses a flag system thats completely inflexible.

Paladins are not fun to play, too many limitations.

I know some people are into that, but for me it takes away the fun.

In 5e, they have taken away the limitations... Paladins are barely worth the name now... As usual with 5e, what is left of the class is really just an power subset archetype... WoTC has removed anything even approaching requirements or even expectations of how a Class SHOULD be played... I assume it's mostly the same in BG3. There just aren't any real Paladins in D&D anymore. :steamsad:

Yeah damn bro better let them goblins beat me to death. can't rescue the good guys, because I'll end up murdering people? stupid logic is that.

you realise it's not intentional half of these oathbreaker issues are? want a great example homie. I poisoned the goblin camp and walked off merrily while my oath was intact. Not very knightly was it. xD

You speak first then act, if they attack you first - then you can kill them.

um no.
if you went murder hobo on those goblin you would not have gotten an oathbreak

Looked like you went peaceful route to get in then immediately got punished for it by going back on your word

No, D&D simply leaves it up to the DM (And the player). There's still guidance, and an oathbreaker class. P.s. This is exactly how it worked in the past with DMs, just the guidance is the other way around (The DM is given guidance on how to repent, instead of guidance on how to punish).

It really feels to me from the posts i've seen from you, that you play Lawful stupid, where everything is black and white, and everything must be pg-13, even in a M rated video game. And any companion that is even morally grey, nevermind on a bad path but redeemable, should be put to the slaughter. (Which to me, makes you very clearly the villain you seem to think everyone else is)

It's just so... gross? Seeing the world in such an absurdist black and white?

I never made a promise to not kill anyone. I simply snuck in. said I'm here to see the leader. Never said I was going to be peaceful ;) it's just an overlooked flaw with the class
RakiaTime Jul 9, 2023 @ 10:56am
i think the mistake here was Larian didnt make it explicitly obvious you were breaking your oath, hell you dont even know exactly what your oath is

for me i knew i was breaking it and i did it anyway because i considered it the right thing to do

Agree the oath should have been broken as soon as you lied to get in.

Though it might be because your technically not fully lieing yet until your fully siding with the druid when you rescued halsin

edit: also your oath actually etched into your starting armor description
Which is kinda cool but also should be more prominent

like the devotion has Honesty, Courage, Honor, and duty written on it
