Edit: Apparently I've missed some of the books - looks like they go from ~1290s to ~1480s, BG3 is set sometime after 1492.

Books aren't considered canon by WotC btw.

I think most novels are technically in some sort of... canon bubble? Where they're not necessarily canon unless WotC needs it to be for another product?

Anyway, the majority of the Drizzt books took place closer to the timeline of BG1-2, so not much crossover there. After I stopped reading, there was a time jump, so I think the books are roughly at the same year of continuity as this game? Doesn't mean we'll necessarily see any of the characters, though. Drizzt isn't as comparatively popular as he was when BG1-2 dropped.

I'm actually not sure what timeline this is set in, I'd be curious to see where it falls in line with DnD movie as well considering they seem to have made that fully canon.

The DnD movie is almost certainly in or around "current year" in the Forgotten Realms Timeline, as is BG3.

I believe the latest books are set ♥♥♥♥ DR so only a few years behind BG3. WolfheartFPS has done a video on this on YouTube.

I thought his appearances in BG1-2 were more gratuitous than anything else.

Drizzt is canon, but technically his books aren't necessarily canon if they clash with something else.

The canon rules are dumb, and largely pointless since DMs are encouraged to twist it anyway, so whatever.

I believe Drizzt is probably alive, and it's possible we could run into him if Larian wished to include him.

^ Basically, current rules are: 5E, published by WotC, tabletop rpg adventures/rulebooks only. Anything else may or may not exist and may or may not be used. Technically speaking, even this game isn't canon - how close it has to be followed remains to be seen.

I expect much of which we may do in BG3 could reasonably not be canon as far as what the next chapter of the canon holds. If we kill Ulder Ravengard, usher in a new reign of the Dead Three, and turn Baldur's Gate City into a breeding pit for fresh Illithid tadpoles, then I daresay we have deviated from the intended direction the narrative is meant to go in terms of future DnD content.

Sure, though was referring more to the state of the world at the start of the game / as we first meet it, rather than results of our actions.
