You get the option even without him in the party - many NPCs can be forcefully targeted and killed. You do get a push to do so if Astarion is with you, as he hates the hunter and the hunter becomes immediately suspicious. Iirc, failing a check to hide Astarion's nature results in combat, though I believe success causes a loss of rep with Astation.
I know there's an outcome where Astarion just murders the guy in the middle of the conversation. I can't remember if you have to not know he's a vampire yet for that to happen.
There's basically an insight check where you can realize how tense he's getting and if you don't tell him to chill he just murks the guy right then and there.
Now that i would like to see. By the time i found the hunter i already knew Astarion was a vampire. Might have to hot foot it straight over there on me next run!
