Anything I should do to prepare myself for BG3? besides playing the first 2 games, is there any online resource I can read or watch to catch myself up to speed?

I second this. He also did a narration of Descent into Avernus, which is a module that plays shortly before bg3. It'll help you understand some things going on in the game

If you want more videos that go into the lore and history on various events, creatures, and the universe as a whole, I'd also recommend MrRhexx on youtube, he's a great channel for learning about a ton of different things in the forgotten realms.

No, since they will perverse the original trilogy characters/story due to Wizards of the Coast involvement and their garbage OC story on Baldur's Gate.
If anything, you better off not knowing.

It's just life experience. In time you too will see countless titles you care about get graped by adaptations, remasters and sequels, that disregard or change original.

Baldur's Gate is considered canon content in the events of the world, so everyone else around it certainly does impact it, regardless of if you like it or not.
Feel free to ignore whatever you wish, everyone's allowed to do that. Doesn't mean it doesn't still exist though.

The biggest thing you can do to prepare yourself is this; have fun.

That's it. Play how you want to play. I would recommend not save-scumming and just letting the dice roll as they roll. There aren't really any skill checks that block you from progressing the story, just obstacles that can be resolved through dialogue or finding an alternate path if the check fails. Sometimes the alternate paths are better and funnier.

I would also try to get an idea about the type of character you want to play. Do you want to be in melee, do you want to fight from range, how much do you want magic to influence your fighting style, that sort of thing. Once you have a concept feel free to ask questions and we will be happy to help give tips to achieve that concept.
