That's it. Play how you want to play. I would recommend not save-scumming and just letting the dice roll as they roll. There aren't really any skill checks that block you from progressing the story, just obstacles that can be resolved through dialogue or finding an alternate path if the check fails. Sometimes the alternate paths are better and funnier.
I would also try to get an idea about the type of character you want to play. Do you want to be in melee, do you want to fight from range, how much do you want magic to influence your fighting style, that sort of thing. Once you have a concept feel free to ask questions and we will be happy to help give tips to achieve that concept.
