Rogue subclass - Assassin?
Assassin is an interesting pick as it's quite the underperformer in most cases in the actual tabletop game as it relies on enemies to be surprised, which is incredibly uncommon. Is there going to be more opportunity in BG3 or do we know if it will be structured a bit different than the actual book to be more viable in this game?

Assassin pairs well with Champion.

I mean, it's the only pick since it's the last remaining PHB subclass for them.

The only classes that got non-phb subclasses are the ones that got shafted in the PHB and only have like 2 options.

The only thing really holding you back in this game is your own brain, One of the things I like about Larian games is they really let you think outside the box, Like setting up an entire epic gate battle with explosives before it starts and one turn ending said epic gate battle.

So to your question I think assassin will be fine it'll depend on the player and how they go about playing the game.

Sounds like something an Illithid parasite would say. :steamhappy:

It's going to be really cool to see what all the classes/Origin characters get for indulging in those tiny little brain bugs. :steamhappy:

It's the sort of thing Larian could rebuild top to bottom without anybody batting an eye.
Well I mentioned this earlier, the level 9 feature for Assassination seems like its going to be either useless or very hard to implement. It will probably just be a bonus to certain checks or involve some form of disguise self. The real reason it underperforms is because most campaigns dont have an opportunity for any infiltrators and their main damage dealing ability is like level 17 or something, no campaign goes that long.

So you're stuck with your level 3 feature. And then you have to decide if you should multiclass and get something thats actually useful, or keep buffing your sneak attack.

Honestly the only time rogue is good is when you can exploit sneak attack. any other time its bad. thats the sad reality. they are good at skill checks though, and would probably make a good main character since our main character ends up being the one that initiates most actions. So tbh our mains should probably all be rogues or bards. or both.

buuut to answer your question, the reason its hard to surprise people in the tabel top game is because DMs are usually jerks who dont want you to trivialize their encounters and so they make sure you fail all your checks or "Oh, uh, there was a guard watching you the entire time, no surprise round. BUT ONE SNUCK UP BEHIND YOU! HAH. YOU'RE SURPRISED!"

But in BG3, you can literally save/reload until you pull off a successful surprise attack. So i'd say the odds are 100% that you'll get to use this feature every combat. To make it easier, have Wyll cast invisibility (or greater invisibility) on your rogue, and just go around assassinating everything like in assassins creed

You don’t need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn’t incapacitated, and you don’t have disadvantage on the attack roll.
from my experience it's incredibly easy to get sneak attack, especially if you play ranged rogue, thanks to cunning action hide...
Either you attack from stealth or you attack some enemy who has some ally in range. One of those has almost always been the case.

Agreed, sneak attack is super easy to trigger.

Basically the answer I was looking for. If getting a surprise round is easy, then Assassin will be perfectly fine. Thank you.
