After that you should get at least 14 constitution(higher if you play melee), then put some stats in dexterity(decides initiative(how fast you act in combat)).
Make sure your character is proficient in any armor / weapon they equip otherwise they are penalized.
Max your primary stat.
Con secondary.
Dex thirdly if you're sticking to medium armor, ignore dex (unless primary) if you're going for Heavy armor.
Try to get proficient in the character creation for Checks (religion, history, acrobatics, etc.) for traits that matches your stat allocations.
Physical attack characters are fairly simply to play as it's mostly reliant on your weapon and a small selection of methods to attack.
Spell casters requires a bit of reading.
You can only concentrate on 1 spell at a time with the tag "concentration"
read your spells.
that's probably the shortest Tl;DR for a game following the ruleset of DnD E5
Secund this, Dexterity is the most usefull stat if not your primary one. (Not every class need Dex but most do)
Constitution is always good ( More HP, less death)
Try to have even numbers with your stats, odds numbers are not really usefull exept for multiclassing, I don't recommend it if you don't know what you are doing.
Be careful with weapons, always use a weapon you are proficient with or you will miss your hit a lot.
As for skills, I'd say the higher importance ones are perception, persuasion and stealth. Some races get certain skills automatically and you can pick a background that also gives you skills.
However, there is one incredibly potent way to play the game and that is to actually use consumable items, potions of giant strength last until a long rest and give you a strength of 21 for example. I've seen videos where someone solo'd an encounter of four fifth level characters with one 2nd level character because they used a bunch of buffs, potions and scrolls before the fight.
Or you could just play as a high wisdom druid and go circle of the moon because their physical stats are based on whatever animal you're currently shapeshifted into.
