Try it once and you won't go back!
how the hell do i kill the guy.
Kill Astarion Laezel or Wyll the obnoxious trio.
1. Shadowheart: good utility and tough.
2. Lae'zel and Astarion: both are solid at killing things
3. Gale: lots of utility and damage
4. Wyll: Only companion that actually feels badly designed, and his performance is awful unless you're resting all the time.
Shadowheart is life.
Shadowheart is win
Considering you're playing a sorc, you have Charisma covered, so I'd say Shadowheart, LAe'zel and one more. Cleric buffs make everything better, and having a tank makes trivial encounters a lot faster. I'd take Astarion as the 3rd simple because I like having a good skill monkey and rogues are the best nless your MC is a bard.
Party composition is going to largely depend on what you're playing to try and provide a balanced party. Still wish we'd get an extra character slot so that way we're not shoehorned into the same part just to be optimal.
I'd say it depends on what class you are.
Shadowheart is always a net-positive in the group. Clerics are essential to any party. I'd switch out her mace for a dagger though because she has more dex than strength.
Lae'zel is always a solid choice for a frontliner (unless you yourself are a fighter, barbarian or paladin who can fill that role).
Gale can learn literally any spell in the game from scrolls. He shouldn't be able to learn cleric spells but he currently can, and having a solid spell-caster in the party is always great. His personal story though does get him hungry for magic so you'll have to keep an eye on that.
Wyll seems like he's designed to be a hexblade warlock when we don't have that in the game yet. Hes got solid charisma and can make an excellent face for the party if the player is not a warlock, sorcerer or bard themselves. Keep him at range and have him be an eldritch blast turret with hex and he'll be doing a lot of damage.
Astarion is a rogue, and that makes him the skill monkey. Anyone can be good at anything but rogues are easily the best at doing things. Shadowheart can pick locks but not as good as he can. With the mobile feat and the thief subclass, Astarion is a sneak attack guru and can easily do some of the most damage in the party, slipping in and out of combat without ever needing to do a disengage action.
Kill the other two as quickly as you can.
Lae'zel and Gale are both solid choices, good at what they do, but having 2 people doing the same job might be a bit redundant. If you're a sorcerer/wizard no need for Gale, and you don't have to deal with his quirks, if you're a fighter, don't need Lae'zel and don't have to deal with her attitude.
Astarion can be deadly and the skills are nice, however Shadowheart can cover for the skills if you don't bring him.
Wyll's in a weird place, but to be clear, he's not a hexblade. He's got a cambion patron, not a sentient weapon / the raven queen. Fiend Patron is good and the best PHB option for melee warlock, but Pact of the Blade is kinda sucky without Hexblade, and I don't see us getting Hexblade.
---
If I was an arcane caster I'd go for Lae'zel, Shadowheart and Astarion; Fighter would replace Lae'zel with Gale; if neither, I'd drop Astarion to take both Lae'zel and Gale.
It's more a matter of compatibility, because most companions have serious strong personality and all can irritate someone or someone else. I see no exception.
But how guess for OP, it's not possible.
It's much better to just try them all a bit to decide, it won't kill your first play.
EDIT:
And for the Cleric it's no older D&D and no way as critical, short rests and food change a lot the picture and long rest is fine to complement it.
Wyll is infinite gold. cast darkness. use devil sight. pick pocket. gg. wyll basically gets everything for free 100% of the time, then turn around and sel it back to the person you just robbed.
in general, low level, your best characters are bruisers, so fighters and barbarians, because magic users dont really pick up any super effective spells.
but if you intend on abusing the rest system, all spellcasters are obscenely powerful since you could have a party of 4 spellcasters all casting burning hands on the entire enemy team right from the start.
If you're new and dont know what you're doing then i'd say you at bare minimum want Laezel because her high strength high hp and no spells to worry about makes her a perfect choice for beginners, she can jump to places, throw enemies off cliffs or into fire, and never misses her melee attacks, and she has a bow.
Second choice should always be Shadowheart. Because she can heal, has a shield, and has good armor, making her a tank and also the healer. She is also able to use her spell slots to strengthen your team or hinder the enemy but i never found that very useful compared to flat out healing spells. Shadowheart and Laezel hate eachother though, so, keep that in mind.
Your 3rd party member will be you, whatever character you find most fun.
The 4th character will be up to you. You have two tough characters, one of whom is a healer, but shadowheart wont be dealing much damage unless you waste her healing spell slots on Guiding Bolt (which is a pretty strong damage attack at the cost of not being able to heal with that spell slot.)
So consider that when choosing the last 2 members of your team. You might start by picking another companion, then build your created character based on your team. You could place a healer like shadowheart to give you double the healing, then your last companion could be Gael to give you some AOE damage with burning hands. But in general, Astarion isnt good because Rogues are bad in dnd since most of the fun things they can do are just roleplay and require a DM.
Personally my favorite is to run a cleric and max out strength and con. No need for wisdom if all my spells are just healing spells, then I basically am a tank just like Laezel, with the same strength score, I can do basically anything she can do, except I can also use many healing spells.
thank you for the feedback.. though i sold shadowhearts shield.. i saw she had one when i got her, but she has no proficiency in having one..
also noticed that her stats lean more towards daggers then a sword, so i changed it to a dagger aswell..
ofc, i will get her a shield later again once she is proficient in using one..
