You can play what ever you want... Your character will be one of a party of 4. A small difference of a quarter of your group power. You can try to min/max your group after several runs, but you should just take part of an adventure for the first one.

The best, instead of trying to have the most powerful character from the start, is to learn about the rules of d&d 5ed, to just know how it works

Try to cover the various skills with your party selection, ie have someone with high intelligence for skills based on intelligence, someone with high charisma, someone with high wisdom.

Match the backgrounds to make the most of each characters high scores (this assumes you are running more than one character in single player mode (look online for how to start more than one character, it's not difficult if I can do it).

So now, what party? It's easiest if you do something like this.
1) Choose a Divine spellcaster like Cleric (clerics are always a strong class) or Druid (slightly more difficult to build well) for your Wisdom class.
2) Choose a Rogue or a Ranger for sneaking/lockpicking (you need the Sleight of Hand skill if you are a Ranger and want to use them to lockpick. Key stat is Dexterity. Either class makes a god dual-wielder.
3) Choose an Arcane spellcaster like Wizard, Socerer or Warlock. Wizard is the optimum choice here because they should have high intelligence and can cover the intelligence-based skills. There is an item you can find that gives high intelligence if you want to be a sorcerer or Warlock.
4) Choose a fighter type, a meatshield for the party. Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, they are all good choices. Monk might be good here, but they are not implemented yet.

Try to choose a race that allows you to have a 16 in your main attribute. It's not essential, but you did want better builds and this helps you achieve it.

Now you have the bare bones, look for best builds for each class on youtube and play the one or ones that speak to you as your favourites. Remember that if you are only creating a single character, you will have to use your companions to fill in areas of need. Shadowheart (cleric), Astarion (Rogue), Lae'zel (Fighter), Wyll (Warlock) and Gale (Wizard) are your current possible companions.

PS There are several fairly OP builds and not just Charisma based ones. There are very good Wisdom based, Intelligence based builds, or just fighter types that emphasise Strength and Constitution.

As Hub (see above) suggested, the more you know about how the mechanics and the spells work, the better you will be able to succeed..........and I don't mean cheesing stuff everywhere with oil and smokepowder barrels (though you can), it's more about being better by knowing enough to make good decisions, while playing.

ah okay,, because when i played pathfinder, for my party companions i just auto level them up,, and focus on my char itself,, seems i'm willing to do the same way when playing this game

You can do that, but you asked for best builds and letting the computer do stuff does not lead to the best choices. Also there is some stuff (for your companions) that you have to do yourself.

i mean just for myself as main DPS,, the companion only just for supporting me like you've mentioned (buffing, healing, lockpicking, etc)

if you dont care about anything but beating the game with most ease just go with fighter 2h with no subclasses

Unlike pathfinder, This game doesnt shove 50 classes in your face. its much less demanding on you building a coherant class and more tied to what you like to do and whats fun to you along with roll playing and each can be broken in its own special way

like, Pathfinder there are actually bad classes that you probably shouldnt play. in BG3 all of them are good

There is no "best build" and that's one this game's best strengths!
IgnatiusJ.Reilly Mar 12, 2023 @ 10:52am
With no multi-classing, and few sub-classes or feats implemented, their no much 'building' to be done. The game is set up for strength based warriors, by and large, with the caveat that heavy armor options are limited. So, have a +2 Dex mod to maximize the efficiency of medium armor.

A greatsword wielding Fighter (Battlemaster) or Barbarian (Beserker) seem to be the most powerful and efficient picks. Use your companion's spells to buff them and they will trivialize anything in Early Access. Paladins would also be an option, but the Oath system seems utterly bugged right now. Though you could just play an Oathbreaker Paladin, I guess.

And that's the reason why I will probably enjoy this game and actually finish it(though I will try finishing Kingmaker too). Pillars of Eternity had far simpler approach to builds for me,

Is there a respec option in Baldurs Gate 3, will be? I liked that in Pillars of Eternity, it allowed for me to make some dumb mistakes or experiment with builds found on the internet.

Besides I tend to choose my teams basing it on characters personalities which oftentimes was a big problem in some of the more hardcore RPGs. But there are ways to deal with such things, even lowering difficulty if something gets under my skin.

Level up are not full of talent trees or choices. Sometimes, you just have to clic ok and it's done. At a very few levels, you can put points into a stat, which is your main stat or secondary. Aside of subclasses, you don't have to choose a lot a things

Good to know. Besides, there is nothing that mods cannot fix. Dragon Age Origins didn't had respect option and yet mods fixed it.

There isn't respec yet. There will be on release but we don't know how much it will let you change.

In their last game respec was limitless, and could remake any character from scratch as many times as you wanted. This tends to horrify D&D players so maybe it will be more limited this time. I couldn't guess.
