camera/character movement
So I just purchased BG3 on Steam (will be playing on PC) and man, did I get a rude awakening as to the horrible camera/character movement controls!

Larian Dev's should be ashamed of themselves for having such a horrible scheme for camera/character movement, its convoluted and cumbersome and tiring!

I have played DOS and DOS II on a console in the past and I had no issues with camera or character movement but on PC or maybe this game its just BAD!

I mean, why cant they just use the WSAD keys for forward/back/left/right and the movement of the mouse itself for camera movement?

Push mouse left while holding the W key has the character moving left and the camera follows the character, move the mouse forward and you look up/pull back you look down (or you can reverse these as can be done on consoles) so simple but instead we get this convoluted system of middle mouse button to swing the camera, left mouse button and the Q and E keys, its just a pain i the A$$ to play, takes all the joy out of playing the game!

If you want to see what a easy smooth camera/character movement system should be like, spend $20 bucks on Steam and buy the MMO New World and play it for a few minutes to see whats its like to have a easy/simple system in place.

As it is now, after a while it really becomes just tiring to play the game with all the camera/character movement hoops that i have to jump through!

I really, really hope the devs read this message, b/c in 2023, no game should have such bad controls!

Regards

I have only one trouble with camera, it's the verticallity on some location that bug out and are hard to manage.
Maybe you are not acclimated to PC top/down camera that's why you are struggeling a lot.
Just click to move and use WASD to move the camera + QE to rotate your camera, you need to change your habit cause you are not used to this system, I know changing such thing can be hard.
Concerning New World it's a TP camera, nothing in common with a Top/Down like BG3 and the DOS serie.

Oh, and you can lock the camera on a character, it will folow it when you move the character.(You will just need to rotate it like you said)

Or wait for controller support, I guess this will be the easier solution for you.

I mean, I think the controls and camera of this game are borderline disgraceful at times and I spent almost two years of EA writing and ranting about that...

But NOT because the game wasn't enough of a "third person action game" like the Op is asking here.
I couldn't give a flying ♥♥♥♥ about "WASD movement" and looking up with the camera, frankly.

What I want is being able to select and control the entire party (or portions of it) without feeling the occasional urge to punch the screen.

With the current system, I do feel like punching the screen!

This game has been in early access for two years and they been reinventing the Inventory system and UI system BUT NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE CAMERA/CHARACTER MOVEMENT SYSTEM?!!!!! That is just insane, the camera/movement should be fluid and NOT something the player has to think about!

I just cant believe this and OH, why is there no choice to play on PC using a CONTROLLER?

I have played other single player games on PC and not once did I think about my character movement or camera.

This really is disgraceful on Larin's part, period, full stop!

I think in one of the earlier/older shows Larian was saying, they want you to "explore" the world, find hidden treasure, etc..... but with this camera/movement system, that's asking a lot, how much aggravation can i stand?

Its such a shame!!! Yes, I can get used to it and in short play time bouts I can get through it but man, its.......

Aside from the camera getting into awkward positions sometimes, which there is a way to reset it, I just rarely remember the button, can't say I've had much issues with it.
But then this is the forum that has attempted to nit pick every single possible small detail all the way down to the marrow of the bone to complain about this thing at times, so this isn't unbelievable to see in that regard.

You don't think you're a little entitled here? You swear that every 9-10/10 game has a flawless camera. Reality check, they don't. Camera has been an issue in most games since games operating in the 3d space were invented. Mario 64 amazing game, bad camera. Zelda games, bad camera. wolfenstien, doom? BAD CAMERA. yet that doesn't stop a game from being good.

Why don't you fix the camera for them?

"Why don't you fix the camera for them?"

So that's your answer, why don't I do it? Hey, maybe I should write my own games as well!?!

And no, all games don't have camera problems, this is the first game I've played with such a horrible camera/movement issue. Never have I played a game on PC and had to worry about my CAMERA! The dam camera has a life of its own sometimes, does thinks I don't want it to do, things I did not initiate!

I tried to return the game but since i played 14 hours, they denied me, next time I will buy my games on GOG, they let you return up to 30 days!!!

I agree with the movement problem. It's a pain. I hate it. If it isn't changed, then pretty sure I'll quit bothering with this game.

100% It needs some serious love. I can't even play it because it is nonstop pulling me out of the game.
It's nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be, but it could use some improvement.

+1.
It never ruined my experience with this game.
My only issues with it is when it comes to verticality, and in combat we don't have the option to turn off snap-to-active-character, so the camera jumps around a lot in combat and that's annoying as hell.

yes camera is bad, controls are ♥♥♥♥... movement is passable... but after 2 years not much was done to make them better there are still countless times when camera gets stuck on things like roofs and similar objects... floors or walls don't show up and there is no way to move characters to the new level... characters get stuck, make circles or go up and down anyway at this point it just whatever. i give up... hehe maybe i should just praise the camera and controls... they are perfec,t gj keep it up... maybe that's what is needed...

Camera has been bad since release. I wouldn't call this a 'lttle problem.' It gets stuck. If you have the follow feature on it is quite janky and not very accurate. Doesn't focus on the character it should be focusing on. Sometimes it lets you go through walls and see into the next room.

I would love to be able to look up. Just a little? 15 degrees?

I absolutely hate the camera, but given the scope of the game (it's already huuuuuuge) and the fact that it's in EA, I'll reserve judgement until launch. After that, I agree that it'll be hard to defend. +1 on the "just look up" suggestion. Feels like I'm wearing a robot outfit made of cardboard boxes.
