Getting my oath broken through self-defense
I'm a Oath of Devotion Paladin and my Oathbreaker Paladin teammate starts a fight. Joined in because they started attacking me. Got my oath broken by fighting for self defense.

Thanks Larian

Guilty by association. Unless you got connections.

It's funny cause in addition to that, me throwing alchemist fire at a suicide goblin breaks my oath, but me throwing alchemist fire at a barrel and accidentally killing an ally npc doesn't.

Man are they bugged or are 5th edition Paladins really that annoying to play on the tabletop? I think i'll give the class a wide birth..

I feel a lot of issues could be resolved by having the paladin's oath be more clearly defined as a guideline for what will or will not break your oath. For Devotion I get the impression that lying (any form of it) and dishonourable combat (attacking someone without warning) will be against their oath, but it seems weird that being a bystander to a fight would also reflect on you. I'm glad they released the class cause it clearly needed the testing and the millions of ways players will break their oath is going to be a lot more valuable than in house testing on the matter.

To be fair, given Larian's penchant for having us trip over a barrel every time we turn around, they really can't blame us for what happens if we accidentally set off a fire/acid/whatever barrel. I'm pretty sure if our character sneezed, one of the 50 barrels nearby in any given location would go off and kill a dozen innocent people.

I love it when this argument comes up, considering I simply ignore barrels that aren't lootable and 99.8% of the time never blow one up or use one in combat. The only time I do do it is for ***** and giggles during the tutorial, otherwise I never touch them.
Considering I can safely ignore the and never blow any up I find it rather humorous there continues to be people that make claims it's completely unavoidable. Guess I'll continue to be the outlier.

Its hard to ignore them when they are everywhere, plus they are really heavy on loot weight.. Try carrying 18-20 like i do..

.......first of all if I can't even remember where the hell they are at any point in the game other than the tutorial, then no they aren't every couple steps in the game.
Also, great way to show you are causing your own problems. That's the other thing I love about the barrel people, they sit there and complain to high heaven about the barrels....THEN USE THEM AND CARRY THEM AROUND as if they have no choice in the matter.
You guys baffle me I have to admit. Cause your own problems then whine about it afterward. Kind of amazing to watch.

Doesn't matter. If you don't like them, follow my lead and DON'T USE THEM. Simple as that.

Getting back on topic, I havent played a Paladin yet, but it seems like the oaths are a little to easy to break because of how vague they are. It might be smart for Larian to implement some kind of warning system for more general breaches of the oath. Obviously, if you start killing random innocents, your oath goes bye bye, but for less obveous situations, a warning and slap on the wrist would work better, with some kind of counter that tracks how many times you've done it that lowers over time or in response to certain actions taken.

you break your oath, you get a new character at camp. You want to go back to your oath, you just talk to him. You wanna be an oath breaker you just talk to him... So no risk, no warning needed, you just square it at camp. It is just as easy as if one of your companions were shoved down a pit, only talk to the skeleton to resurrect people and the weird knight if you want to resurrect your oath.

That being said, I expect they will tweak how easily the oath is broken on full release as I've heard some silly examples.

I guess thats fair enough, but I feel like that shouldnt be needed. From a roleplay perspective at the very least.
