Why does everyone hate Gale?
I've been playing the game, and he honestly reminds me of Alistair from Dragon Age: Origins, which is a good thing. Sure he's a little mysterious, but that's everyone at the moment.

Do people not like his personality, or it is a story thing? (No spoilers, obviously.)

This may be the first CRPG where I actively disliked all of the companions. Except Minsc.

One of the cRPG fundamentals is picking shiny loot and store it in your inventory.
When someone daclares, that he wants to take away your shiny thingies just to destroy them — he becomes your enemy and cannot be trusted no more.
Gale is one of those :D

As far as I know lore-wise Mystra isn't exactly supposed to be particularly... difficult or parsimonious with sharing her favors around.

Sure, not every mage can brag about banging her, but he's not going to be the first or last, either.
In fact, it's pretty much implied that he's already been canned for the next one.

On a related note, I wish the game made a bit more clear if the current backstories are supposed to fit level 1 characters or if the implication is that the tadpole made some of them regress in power (an idea that the game seems to be alternatively suggesting -in some party banters- and dismissing, when not turning around entirely with "the tadpole is giving us extra power").
It's like the writers can't even agree with what's exactly going on there.

About the little habit of feeding on magical artifacts, I feel like it would be a lot easier to accept if there was at least anything extraordinary about Gale. For example he could have out-of-ordinary ability scores, or gain some kind of permanent bonus from each artifact consumed.
Currently he presents himself as a sub-average bog standard level 1 mage, when it comes to stats, which makes his backstory only more puzzling and his "little problem" hard to accept on the long run.

Still, my main issue with Gale currently is that I have trouble taking seriously anyone who goes around adventuring in a plain bathrobe/granny nightvest.

Wonder if we'll get any abilities like that later. Astarian has his vampiric bite (but is also succeptible to running water), Wyll has a sending stone eyeball, Shadowheart has some unknown and uncontrolled power (plus the maguffin artifact), Lae'zel has... well, she's a fairly standard githyanki warrior tbh, What does Gale have?

Not a whole lot.

BUT!!

Take a look at the loading screen art and whatnot for Gale. He definitely has some power and, idk if it's just from earlier drafts of him or something, but his hair is much lighter colored in some of the art as if he has been drained or empowered in some way. Lot of lightning themes, though the only lightning spell he starts with is the laughable witch bolt. He doesn't even start with shocking grasp.

Would love for him to have something like the extra high intelligence score you mentioned or something though. Some extra intelligence skill proficiencies or even expertise, etc.

REASONS TO HATE GALE:
1- He is a conceited piece of ♥♥♥♥.
2- He has a ridiculous back story.
3- He will betray the party in the end. I will take bets on this.
4- He tries to force you to resurrect him. You can get around that and it is satisfying.
5- He hits on Shadowheart, and in MY BG ALL the women are MINE.
6- He "needs magic items to live" tough ♥♥♥♥.
7- He is a wannabe know it all.
8- He claims to have slept with a goddess, I call BS.
9- He is singularly worse than ANY custom made mage, so to say he is somehow a prodigy is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
10- His personality grates.

I could go on.
Astarion is next most hated.
Due to a devil's deal I made, I let Wyll live, the other two are toast though. {looking at You Wes!}

I am working with my son to make a mod to utterly humiliate Gale. When that is done, it will be out for public consumption.. No changes, as it is aimed for utter ruination of the tiny pricked ass.

Peace
I like Shadowheart. Gales backstory is a compulsive liar's dream.

My favorite part of this thread was when I started it and said "hey no spoilers" and everyone started to spoil anyways. So that's fun.

It's in fact easy. You just have to be vague. What a crappy argument.

When u ask why u hate Gale u going to get a proper answer not a yes or no answer.

For me its everything Hate his character , hate his quest ,hate his annoying death dialogue and necrosis. If Larian wanted to make a character that not many people like then they managed to do so with Gale :) Tho I doubt this was their idea of the character.

It's almost as if people only read the title and don't bother with anything else. Unreal.

Ow, yeah! This si how we should meat Gale!!!
Mob of peasant with pitchforks and torches shound try to burn him on a stake and we can save him or NOT. We pick not to, of course!
Infidel! Burn! Eating relics and holy items, how dare you! We can't have that!

A bit like the burning of Viconia DeVir in bg 2 that was fun and there was no item eating..
