How many BG1-2 characters are they gonna insert into BG3? And what is considered canon?
I saw Minsc and Jaheira in the trailer. And 5th edition is 100+ years later after BG2 events. I get it that Minsc was petrified some time after BG2 and there even something like that alluded in BG2's ending slides. But what about Jaheira? Will her canon be taken from games or from that abysmal unmentionable fanfic book series? It's a very big bag of worms devs are going to open by forcing their own version of canon events and characters. Does AD&D canon say anything about these characters? I've heard MC from BG1-2 events was killed off by them, which means they took those f*cking books as canon?

Larian's probably going by whatever the loremasters at WotC give the okay to, like as not.

Minsc canon was already made by wotc 6 years ago in comics.

Jaheira I do not know. But I would estimate that Larian is not inventing anything regarding this by themselves.

The books aren't canon. 5E canon does share some similarities with the books (i.e. the Bhaalspawn being a human named Abdel Adrian), but they're their own independent things.

The Bhaalspawn is actually killed off in the 5E tabletop module "Murder in Baldur's Gate" (as far as I'm aware, this event does not occur in the novels, which just follow the events of the games). It happens when they either kill or are killed by the second-to-last Bhaalspawn several decades after BG2, which reunites Bhaal's soul, thereby resurrecting him.

As for what is canon, 5E tabletop source books and modules take precedence over all other media, and are the basis for BG3's story.

Then what about the Bhaalspawn? Is he/she dead in the source books?
Minsc being petrified - is this in them too?
Jaheira - what will be her backstory? Her BG1-2 story can vary greatly depending on how you did her personal quests and whether she was romanced or not.

As stated in the post you quoted, they're now "dead," or more accurately, were completely subsumed into Bhaal's resurrected form, per 5E canon (since it happened in an official tabletop module).

Yes, it's mentioned in Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus (the official prequel module to BG3) that he spent time as a statue in Baldur's Gate, but was recently unpetrified. There are some comics that involve his exploits after being unpetrified, though I'm not sure the canonicity of them. At the very least, him being petrified and then unpetrified in the modern era is completely canon.

As far as I'm aware, she hasn't appeared in any 5E DnD media. Given half-elves can live to around 180 years old, she could still be around, although she may be getting a bit old at this point.

I'm not worried about her age, half-elves don't look like old crones in their 125-140s, more like middle aged humans. Take Tanis Half-Elven from Dragonlance books, for example.
But I'm worried they're gonna invent some dumb backstory for her and Minsc and ruin yet another good childhood memory left from BG1-2 games. The sort of dumb sh*t like the way old classic characters from Star Wars IV-VI were grossly mishandled in the new trilogy.

afaik she'd be in the range around 150-170y/o at this point in time. So "a bit old" is an understatement, especially considering that not all half-elves can get that old. there are cases which had a somewhat normal human lifespan.
Though knowing WotC, and how they like to keep characters around they'll probably have something for her...It's not that life prolonging magic in one form or another is that rare for these kind of things...it's only rare for player characters...xD

In a lot of core books, Druids specifically, at high level acquire "Timeless Body" as a trait. If Jaheira (Fighter/Druid) canonically went through the BG2 storyline, she'd likely have that in the 5e side of things.

I believe Jaheira was 25 in BG2 (can't locate source atm)
According d&d wiki sources 123 years have passed.

Jaheira would be 148. In relation to human real word female average of western worlds 85 and half elf 180. Jaheira would translate to 70 year old human.

So I guess you could say that assesment "bit old" would be correct :)

it only shows how desperate they have become about bad press so they now try to include known characters without any kind of reference into the game to get it some positive feedback

I need to add voice of Jaheira sounds more old than young. Which fits perfectly imo.

Yeah, I've been slightly off...I thought she was born around 133x DR, however https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Jaheira states she was born 1347 DR. As the current year of the events in BG3 should be 1492 DR she'd be 145.

Rofl. Very accurate. And I’m not picky when it comes to books
Cannons are usally these giant gun like devices but they shoot massive balls instead of bullets that is cannon!

Ah. Wiki would have had her exact age! So few years younger.

Anyways Her voice and appearance in trailer matches that perfectly in my head.
