It's not always about the stats.
Other races just get way too many bonus skills/proficiencies/traits that make the flat +1 to all stats look useless by comparison.
Hell that's probably why the upcoming OneDnD update is making Variant Human the base template.
Oh well, I'll see myself out.
I mean, I personally just don't find an average of 2 extra +1s to stats that I likely won't use in most circumstances is anywhere near even the simplest things like Darkvision or a few Weapon Proficiencies.
If they brought in Dhampir, I'd play it as a human.
Taken together this makes a good alternative, especially if you have specific feats you want to access as early as possible. I might even suggest they go further and endorse adding a +2 to ANY one skill for VH's - it helps accentuate human adaptability.
It's absolutely brilliant for roleplay, but do you really want a race that can, with half feats, start the game at 18 Ability? with the potential to have it maxed at level 4?
I mean, you already can potentially get 20 at level 4, but then there's still basically an additional ability point on the board as well as multiple feats.
With 2 half feats, during EA, you can also reach 20 without a single ASI.
This is a CRPG, it needs to consider balance almost more than a DM has to, because a DM can always homebrew his content, but in this game everything is fix.
If they dont add them, then there is the potential for someone to mod them in, but I'd be happy if they didnt add them, because then Variant Humans will be "meta" as the young people call it.
Variant Human doesn't get 18 at level 1. They get +1 in two different stats, then can potentially up that to a +2 with a half-feat, but that'll only get you to 17. You're thinking of Custom Lineage, I think.
Yeah, Custom Lineage is banned in AL, but you're 100% allowed to use Variant Human, the SCAG Half-Elf Variants, and the Customizing your Origin rules from Tasha's.
That makes two of us.
