it's a role playing game, some people will want to be a human in a weird world.

It's not always about the stats.

V-humans would actually make me finally role play a human instead of just using a Half-Elf all the time for my "human play throughs". +1 to all stats IMO just isn't all that interesting or even good, so I'd love to see v-humans not only added, but eventually made the default for humans.

Vanilla 5e human is so bad that it kind of ourweighs that, and I'm the guy who favors playing a human 9 times out of 10.

Other races just get way too many bonus skills/proficiencies/traits that make the flat +1 to all stats look useless by comparison.

Hell that's probably why the upcoming OneDnD update is making Variant Human the base template.

Yeah we need variant human to be the base template for sure. 100 percent!!

I feel like I'm the only person in the world that likes standard human.

Oh well, I'll see myself out.

I mean, you're more than welcome to like it, but on a baseline mechanical level it really is shortchanged compared to the proficiencies/skills/other traits that other races get.

I mean, I personally just don't find an average of 2 extra +1s to stats that I likely won't use in most circumstances is anywhere near even the simplest things like Darkvision or a few Weapon Proficiencies.

yeah like alot of the other races get things like hide or darkvision or somthing else thats good plus stat increases take elfs +2 to dex and plus 1 to somthing else plus darkvision weapon pro and other things depending on wat kinda elf u are and humans get wat just +1 to all now if u could stack them to at least +2 to wat u want and then desperse the rest would be ok but u still lose alot of things like dark vision so the bonus feat is realy good for Vhumans

I always found it weird that variant human is a requirement to make humans viable in DnD. Why isn't it the default sub-race?
FangN Oct 31, 2022 @ 4:10pm
yeah Vhuman should just be Human because realy normal human is sht

If they brought in Dhampir, I'd play it as a human.

That feat variant humans get early, is what makes them interesting. The +1 to two ability scores is nothing much.

Taken together this makes a good alternative, especially if you have specific feats you want to access as early as possible. I might even suggest they go further and endorse adding a +2 to ANY one skill for VH's - it helps accentuate human adaptability.

Variant Human is actually banned in Adventuring league iirc, because having a Feat at level 1 is kinda broken.
It's absolutely brilliant for roleplay, but do you really want a race that can, with half feats, start the game at 18 Ability? with the potential to have it maxed at level 4?

I mean, you already can potentially get 20 at level 4, but then there's still basically an additional ability point on the board as well as multiple feats.

With 2 half feats, during EA, you can also reach 20 without a single ASI.

This is a CRPG, it needs to consider balance almost more than a DM has to, because a DM can always homebrew his content, but in this game everything is fix.

If they dont add them, then there is the potential for someone to mod them in, but I'd be happy if they didnt add them, because then Variant Humans will be "meta" as the young people call it.

Variant Human doesn't get 18 at level 1. They get +1 in two different stats, then can potentially up that to a +2 with a half-feat, but that'll only get you to 17. You're thinking of Custom Lineage, I think.

Yeah, Custom Lineage is banned in AL, but you're 100% allowed to use Variant Human, the SCAG Half-Elf Variants, and the Customizing your Origin rules from Tasha's.
