No XP for avoiding fights.
One of the few things that I didn't like about Divinity 2 was that if you avoided a fight with persuasion you got no XP. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case in BG3 but looks like I was wrong.

It's been a while since I played it but as I recall Planescape Torment would award XP for for talking your way out of a fight. Not sure how it works in tabletop.

As it stands you're essentially penalised for not taking the violent route which runs counter to the RP.

This is false. BG3 does award experience for non-violent solutions.

It's partially true. There is xp for resolving some situations through dialog, but not necessarily for avoiding combat. For example, if you sneak past the goblin scout camp just before the ruined temple, you won't get any xp for avoiding them. You'd actually have to enter the camp and engage with them in dialog, avoiding combat through Charisma skills, to gain any xp.

This is true. Outright sneaking around or never interacting with a group won't get you xp. General progression, completing quests/tasks, engaging in dialogue to talk down a fight are the main ways to get xp in the game if I'm remembering correctly.

You also seem to get less exp for taking enemies out in any way other than direct combat. The bandit camp outside of the undead cave has something you can drop onto the cracked floor and take out two bandits. If I remember correctly you don't even get half the exp for killing them that way than you do for killing them straight up, it might be more than half but it isn't equal. Larian has a bad habit of making there be an "optimal" way to complete their games, and any other way gets less items and exp.

I think every rpg ever has had an 'optimal' way that gives you the most xp, it's just up to you if you want to do so.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution I remember as being particularly funny - I think the most xp was sneaking past everyone unseen and then doubling back to knock them all unconscious. And there wasn't a level cap really so you technically benefited from doing this to everyone.

I actually believe experience will be rebalanced at release, anyway.

I just fought Gimblebock, killing them gave me 20 more xp than a non violent solution+loot. This is a huge oversight imo, just like in DOS 2, you get rewarded for being a murder hobo and that gets really boring.
