Mark Rein Hagen had originally planned for it to seamlessly fit VtM and the planned Mage game. Ars Magica providing a ton of background, and the White Wolf magazine providing the reach, to market the White Wolf line of games with the brothers Wieck.
Time has been an impediment many times to running integrated games.
Werewolf the Apocalypse's Impergium being a classic example. You can do it, you just have to take liberties.... which you have to do with Ars Magica and VtM/Mage.
I totally agree that using the Dark Ages setting as a beginning point is needed to make it "feel" right. Then having Tremere split into the two factions is perfect. Of course, since Mages can actually still come up with immortality potions or methods, it begs the question of why the drastic actions of the inner council of House Tremere.
It pays noting that Goratrix i the actual brains of the operation in VtM, and that Tremere, while the titled archmagi of the house, is not really the most talented magically. Goratrix is. He created all their strongholds. He created the ritual to become Blood Sorcerers/Vampires instead of Mages. It makes for a really fun game to run an intra house rebellion, which I have done for my table top players. We used to use only the 2nd edition rules, but I finally modernized to the 20th anniversary edition since it is still the good game basically. I discount almost every change from the 5th edition. Most specifically, there is ZERO way that Tremere and the entire Inner Circle were wiped out in Vienna by combo cruise missiles and spec ops infiltration. Impossible. Too many modern protections. Too many arcane protections. Too unlikely that all 7 of the inner council would ever be in Vienna for any reason any more, and certainly all would leave at the first sign of a serious threat to themselves. Not to mention Salout/Tremere....... He ain't going down to punk cruise missiles, spec ops troops when he is in an impregnable fortress with arcane ♥♥♥♥ out the ass. It took multiple nukes and a space mirror to In Theory take down Ravnos when he was insane. Salout is not going down like that and neither is the shadow of Tremere.
I digress, but it is a much better discussion than the troll that started this ♥♥♥♥ wanted.
Peace y'all!
