PSA: Companions go "missing" if you camp in other locations besides the main outdoors camp
It seems to be tied to the various camp spots. So you know how the camp changes location depending on where you are? For me, Astarion is "stuck" in the cave camp. You can sort of "fix" it by having them in your party when you leave camp, at the risk of leaving whoever's not in the party. I managed to have everyone not in the main camp by dismissing everyone in the cave camp, going to an outdoors area that would set me up in the main camp, and everyone was gone. I checked other locations to see if they move to those locations, like the ruins camp. And no, they don't move. Annoying part is that it affects certain camp scenes. Not only is it inconvenient to change out members, they may not participate in certain scenes cuz they aren't "there". I had the Raphael scene while in the cave camp WITH everyone there, but only the 3 in my party participated. The other 2 weren't in the scene, nevermind the usual responses after getting back.

tl;dr - DO NOT EVER travel from locations that provide alternative camp locations like ruins or caves. You will "lose" companions not in party because they will get "stuck" at those alternative camps. Even a quick check on say your camp chest in these areas will result in the same problem.

PS - It's ironic that they introduced the alternative camp locations, only for it to bug out in a way that encourages people to only use the main camp. Not that I'm saying the alternative locations was a bad idea, just pointing out the irony.

Its a bug to this patch lol, might be related to the new camp cleanup mechanic they implemented on patch 8?

It's causing full on crashes for me as well trying to exit from my resting in camp. I think it's trying to load up an Astarion scene when he's bugged in a prior camp and hard crashing the game.

+1 don't camp anywhere that isn't the main camp

I lost some companions this way too... what do you mean by "the main camp"? Is there someplace I'm supposed to go for "main camping" I just do a long rest when I need a long rest.

Hit M for map and then on the top right select Camp as your fast travel destination.

The "main" camp is the one you can go to as soon as you crash land. When you open your map with M, you can fast travel to and from camp. Before- I wanna say patch 6- this was the only camp available, hence main camp. Alternative camp locations are when you travel from caves, ruins, the underdark, etc., essentially any enclosed space as of early access. So any outdoor area like the crashed ship, blighted village, silvanus' grove, etc. will lead to the main camp. But if you go into say a cave near the blighted village and than travel to camp, it'll change the camp location to a cave version of the camp. So do yourself a favor and reload to a point where you haven't lost a companion (provided you don't mind the setback). Always step outside before traveling to camp until they fix this. Save often before traveling to camp (nevermind the rest of the game), so you don't accidentally screw yourself again by going to camp from a cave just to check your stash.
