There are certain feats you can take to help out with this, like Weapon Master to get you weapon proficiencies, but that's literally considered to be the worst feat in all of DnD 5e, so I'd find a different way to get what you need.
There are also subclasses to consider, like Eldritch Knight. Bladesinger Wizard probably won't be in the 1.0 release, but if it is, it'll feature weapon proficiency.
First feat at level 4? Woah. And you can take a weapon prof?
Depnds on the feat. Some just give you proficiency with a musical instrument and lets you perform with the bard.
Some races have proficiency by default. A drow, for instance, automatically starts with proficiency with rapiers and hand-crossbows.
You can take a feat called Weapon Master that gives you proficiency in four weapons of your choice.
Common wisdom suggests that it's a bad feat and that you get what Weapon Master offers you and more with a one-level multiclass dip into a class that has martial weapon proficiency like Fighter as opposed to blowing a feat/ASI just for that.
Yeah, probably. I mean, i agree, but i like gishes, played an elf in the original red box (it was a forced wizard/fighter, back then race and class were the same thing, and only humans could chose a class).
In the advanced and in the two previous baldur's gate games i almost always play as multiclass fighter/wizard.
So... you see a pattern here.
Will think about it (the gith). The elves once had longsword proficiency, and that would have been fine by me, but it seems that in 5e they suddenly forgot how to use them. Shameful.
I will probably go barbarian/sorcerer, it's a combo i usually find funny and exciting, if you really can indeed multiclass in the final version of the game.
Or i could simply go on as a drow warlock and just take the greatsword prof, probably i will never use the weapon anyway, but i just like the idea of a character that can decide to blow you up with a movement of a finger, or just cleave you in half with a big metal thing.
