In reality your religion can't make you cast any spell. And the chosen of god has vanished for thousands of years. But there are still many believer.
I'll take Satan over a god with a raging bi-polar disorder.
For examples that are not limited in the world of DnD, A tactician who devoted all his life to stop blood-shedding and to create a world without pain, but the only thing he concluded, in the end, is that humans are irredeemable and will never stop killing each other; a sensitive apothecary, whose tears would flow every time life faded in his hands, struggled to save every life that crossed his path, but got crushed entirely by his powerlessness and despair, and eventually believes that life itself is a curse, the ultimate happiness is void.
People of twisted nature, people with an affinity for shadows and such. Depressed, heartbroken people. People in need of protection in the dark.
The ultimate goal being the negation of existence and thus suffering. In Shar's estimation, the world of light and everything that comes from it, including life, mortals and the experiences they have, are the consequence of light and her sister Selune.
Shar seeks to unmake creation, in many ways. Or at a minimum, drown it in darkness so complete as to make mortal existence as it is known in the realms, impossible. (Thereby alleviating suffering. Can't suffer if you can't live)
Those that choose to follow Shar are much like gnostic followers of Abrahamic faiths. In that the physical world is seen and regarded as painful, terrible and in some cases even Evil and that it must be endured in order to be overcome. Or preferably ended.
Ironically, an attitude that many atheists adopt in modern times.
Couldn't be that said to Christianity? Or Any Judeo religion.
Like for me Shar is an actual representation of Real religions not the outcast ones.
Like I'm still confused about the preaching of Golden Rule while manipulating it to make it ok to ostracized other forms of religion. Like there was a time in the US they made slavery OK because the Bible said it's ok.
I feel for shadowheart. Like I know she is a good person (without selune or shar) but forced to do acts of evil either because of pain OR the wrong teachings.
