The LEGO Group has seemingly confirmed its first 2024 product, in the form of an official LEGO Dungeons & Dragons set designed by the fan community.

The latest LEGO Ideas contest celebrates five decades of Dungeons & Dragons, a tabletop roleplaying phenomenon that just so happens to turn 50 years old in 2024. The LEGO Group is planning to celebrate that occasion with an official LEGO set, but it’s not looking in-house this time: instead, it’s turning to the community.

That’s because one design from the contest’s finalists will be selected by the LEGO Ideas review board to become a future product. The rules don’t state exactly when it will be released, but all the signs point to 2024. For one, the winner won’t be announced until December 19, 2022 at the latest, and Ideas sets typically arrive on shelves at least a year after getting the green light.

More importantly, though, 2024 is exactly 50 years since the very first version of Dungeons & Dragons – a game that’s still played widely five decades on – arrived on shelves. It makes absolute sense for the LEGO Group to time the release of its new set around that anniversary, so we’re effectively looking at our first confirmed 2024 product.

If you’re interested in taking part, you’ve got until November 14 to get your entry in for the LEGO Ideas contest. A judging panel comprised of the LEGO Ideas team and Wizards of the Coast – D&D’s publishers – will then select up to five finalists, based on criteria including the use of LEGO elements, feasibility and (of course) the best representation of 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons.

The winning model will ultimately be selected by the LEGO Ideas team, but a fan vote from November 28 to December 12 will also help the judges determine interest in specific designs.
