I recall reading that you can keep playing on the previous save.
It can happen but it is rare for it too happen that save's become incompattable.
Saves become incompatible only with content updates, which happen every few months. We are currently on Content Update #8. So your saves will be incompatible when Content Update #9 comes out.
Hotfixes and minor updates are fully compatible though as these patches only fix bugs and optimize the game.
I have completed Act 1 when i bought it back then and I thought maybe after some years gone by ... though its still on Early Access .. maybe , just maybe there's an Act 2.
Lo and behold when I install BG3 and started it, my saves wouldn't work.
Thanks for all the replies. Time to delete BG3 and wait. *sigh*
