Kinda depends on what makes the slate for release that year. If Diablo 4 actually delivers on its promises with Blizzard's back against the wall, then it will be tough to beat (so far a lot of it looks quite good, and it has the best reveal cinematic of pretty much any game ever.)
It absolutely will not happen. At best it could win best RPG and even that is a stretch. There's just too much competition plus if you look at the history of the genre, they generally don't win GotY.
Yeah, this is what I am leaning toward thinking. It would really need to be something else, and blow people away, and it just doesn't seem to have that (not saying it's bad to all the fans that enjoy it) so far in early access. Hard to imagine there being much more to it that could shift impressions toward that.
Partially true when it comes to marketing, but Elden Ring is exceptional in it's own right since it's an amalgamation of lessons learned from all of FromSoft's previous work in one single game. Many of which evoke an old school learn-by-doing charm with relatively minimal handholding, which stands in stark contrast to most big ticket titles.
and here is the reason it won't release in 2023 with luck maybe 2025
and its not BG its some kind of divinity
I think it's pretty locked in for rpg of the year though. If Dragon Age 4 manages to come out, I expect a dumpster fire. I'd be pleasantly surprised if it's not - but when this many lead developers leave during development and it's Bioware I'm not expecting much.
Diablo 4 could have a chance if Blizzard can still make games anymore, but I'm pretty skeptical of that too. They've basically been coasting on the success of the 1994-2004 period imo, where they made Diablo 1-2, Warcraft 1-3, Starcraft, and WoW.
EDIT: Agree with post below, I mostly ignore GOTY awards, just trying to keep expectations realistic.
So far, I'm really enjoying the game and that's good enough for me. An award isn't necessary as far as I'm concerned but hey, if the game gets an award in whatever year that it releases, good for the studio.

Ya... I don't think DA4 will get any award though, right now I just hope they make a good game to end the DA, I am not hoping for a great game from them until I see otherwise, and exactly Blizzard had stopped making good games since forever. I have my finger cross for Bethesta's next game because I love space exlorer.
I don't understand how hard it is to do an origin story like DA:O? how on earth Cyberpunk fail at that and no games have tried to do it since.
As of now, the only game I know of that is coming out in 2023 is Baldur's Gate 3. We know there will be more but it's hard to say what games those will be at this point. We're in the middle of 2nd quarter of 2022.
Hahah seriously? The only game you know coming out in 2023 is BG3???
Can you name any others that are confirmed for 2023?
