Well you say that and I get the reaction but you have to think deeper than this. Take gay out of it and you have an overly flamboyant character despite the perceptions.
BUT then you have to factor in the fact that for some gay people they feel his character fits into a particular stereotype about gay people (yes stereotypes are stupid) and that is a fair assumption. And unless you are gay you don't really get to tell them whether or not that's absurd. It is absurd but it's a stereotype that many feel exists and for a lot of people perception is reality. It's no different for people trying to save us from associating us with orcs and drow even though we keep saying that's stupid because it doesn't exist but by making that tie in you've now created a perception that no one else thought existed but white social justice warriors who are now perpetuating the very thing no one needed.
And I know the whole 'oh my gay friend' thing is frowned up but I can tell you right now my neighbor and his significant other both think Asterion is way over the top and can totally see why people would associate him as being 'gay' because he fits a stereotype that exists for that community.
And this is the entire problem with SJWs. They want to paint a picture of a world where these things don't exist (Or perpetuate something they think exists that doesn't that they need to go and save everyone from). So because this stereotype is absurd then it's not a thing but in this case it actually is a thing. Now does that mean they should change Asterion because he is who he is? No everyone should be who they are regardless BUT if you're designing the character you should have some idea that it's going to be a turn off to anyone who feels whatever about playing gay characters because they are definitely going to associate him with that.
The question is at the end of the day who cares? If you like him you play him if you don't you don't. Simple.
I like him.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=twink
I don't know if people are afraid to call him a twink or if they just don't know the word for what he is.
Oh, they know. :)
People are just being ridiculous. Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade.
Agreed but I don't even think it's that. Twinks don't necessarily have that over the top type of personality.
Well the urban dictionary article I linked describes him pretty well. Anyway, didn't mean to change the subject, just found it funny how people were dancing around the word lol.
Also, you've talked to your neighbor about Baldur's Gate 3 characters? Huh.
I did because of this very debate so I showed him and his SO the character. And the one in question in particular is self admittedly somewhat flamboyant which I can agree with.
I do not like him either. His story is: Fane and sebellie made out in the shower, the product was asterion. The start of his story is identical to
sebellie: knife, threaten, is a slave.
Fane: i am moody, i know the history of dark magic that i am responsible for causing, am the bad, guy, chooses to like the MC and help out of self greed, comes to like them, has the bad ending that no one likes.
welp, that's too bad, I love the sassy vampire boy, though I get why people might not like him.
I recommend you don't kill him though, later on he'll probably open up some interesting story points that you might wanna play through (mainly things about his master, if you are against Astarion then maybe you'll get a chance to side with the master or something), just don't take him in your party, though rogues are very OP... or kill him, as long as you have fun then is cool I guess ^^

Fornicate with La'zael
Fornicate with Shadowheart
Keep the heroic not over the top objectionable druid as a boon companion!
Yeah, I never noticed but I agree. I don't like any of the male companions, with Astarian being the worse.
Shadowheart is okay... but I do love Lae'zel. I'm hoping for some actual great companions at full release. Also hope we can have Minthara join some time. She's awesome too.
