I went berserker and took the two-handed weapon feat at level 4. When they hit, they hit hard, but I try and negate the - attack rolls they suffer with bless or other buffs. Then I had Gale use Enlarge on the barbarian and then you can throw other creatures easier.
Alternatively, you can get high con and high dex then ignore wearing armor. I believe the best AC you can start with as a barbarian without armor is 16, and the gith armor with 14 dex will put you at 17.
Up to you.
Further, wearing armor lets you diversify your stats and race choices in CC. If you want the highest unarmored AC, you have to go Halfling, Half Elf, or Human, and risk not having 16 strength.
If you prefer Dex over Str, then Unarmored Defense is great for AC, otherwise you probably want to be wearing armor.
A dex based Barbarian might profit more from no armor, however suffers from the lore that Barbarians are dump big weapon swinging muscle machines based on strength, as shown by several dialog options.
A human can start with 16 in STR, CON, and DEX so you don't have to choose. The gith plate is still one better AC, but often someone else gets a bigger boost from wearing it. Depends on the group.
