Meli stealing locket trigger?
Anyone know the trigger for Meli stealing Barth's locket and therefore start the locket quest?

Not entirely sure of the exact trigger, but each time I'm there, it's:
1. Make sure Barth survived.
2. Speak to Barth to trigger. (You can speak to Meli first but must quickly speak to Barth right after)
I don't go do anything else first, no shopping for items at the smithy, etc. Just straight to Meli and Barth.

Are you doing anything different to the above?

you need to talk to the other character that was also outside. The human lady I cant remember her name. (the one treating her own wounds)

You may or may not get this quest because one of the main characters involved in this quest can potentially die from the first attack on the Grove entrance.

Aye. Speaking to them if they're alive will help too. Again, as above though. If they died from the first assault, they may not be there. Which is why I only concentrate on the Meli and Barth, and logic should dictate that these are the main culprits for the quest to trigger, because the human female could die also, which would leave you with the two conditions I provided above. However, if you can, I agree, OP should speak to her as well (presuming she survived the assault at the front gate).

All 3 survive the assault. I don't go straight away to Meli and Barth. Usually talk to people around the gate than make my way to the tiefling area. I've talked to all 3 of Aradin's party and Meli and nothing seems to trigger it consistently between my playthroughs.

Since patch 6, I can't seem to consistently trigger it. I've only done 1 and a half playthroughs when patch 6 was relevant (sorcerer and druid respectively) and my current barbarian playthrough with patch 7. I can't remember my druid playthrough (I think it did trigger, but not sure), but with my sorcerer, it never came up. Otherwise, it still hasn't come up with my barbarian.

I reloaded 2 different barbarian autosaves. 1 before with the assault (making sure all survive) and 1 before Arron (the druid hafling trader). With the former autosave, I went straight away to them (after the mandatory Aradin and Zevlor spat) and triggered it just fine. With the later autosave, I already saved all 3, talked to everyone near the gate, and it doesn't function. Also with that latter autosave, I haven't long rested as any resources spent were still spent. Did some quick testing with long resting (either partial or full) and it had no effect.

So there are 3 conclusions I can draw from this. 1 is that Barth is the definite trigger. 2 is that something near the gate or otherwise spending time there disables the trigger. 3 is that reloading or long resting doesn't affect the trigger state.

I'm going to reload the assault autosave and make sure all 3 survive again and than save before entering the camp and talking to people to figure out possible disablers. So will post a reply and make another thread in their technical and gameplay problems thread.

After doing extensive testing, I don't know what causes it to fail. This time, I have it auto triggering. That is, I just walk up to Barth and Meli's area without talking to either of them. I can clearly see Meli doing his stealing animation and running away. Before it either would not work, or require me to interact with Barth to trigger it.

So reloaded the autosave that was just before the goblin assault. Made sure to save everyone in Aradin's party. Dealt with Aradin and Zevlor spat with successful wisdom check and barbarian intimidate check. Moved immediately toward Barth and Meli. It auto triggers without me needing to talk to Barth to trigger. This is the control.

After setting up the control. I would talk to various people or otherwise do my usual actions. So for example. I would talk to Zevlor and run to the trigger spot. It would auto trigger. Next reload, I would talk to Arka, but not to Zevlor, it auto triggers. Same thing as before, talked to Memnos, but neither of the other 2 before, auto triggers. Stole from Dammon and allowed the alert state to pass. Etc., Etc. Repeating all of my actions to the best of my memory including dialogue choices. It always auto triggered. I had 1 crash to desktop from all the reloading but that hasn't affected the results.

My only guess is that a flag that's being set isn't being set properly. So I'm guessing, that Barth's living flag isn't set despite being alive, and therefore doesn't allow Meli to steal from him. Or his living state is set properly, but didn't trigger Meli stealing capability. It's also inconsistent on how the trigger operates. Sometimes it requires the player to talk to Barth or Meli to trigger it. Sometimes it just requires the player to cross the invisible threshold to trigger it without talking to either of them or anyone else.
