drow equipment and lore question
Now as there is currently only a light set of drow equipment in the game (hood and light armor), we can probably guarantee that there is more to be seen later on in the finished game.....

But will there also be stuff like drow-shields or heavy/medium armor sets ?

Also another thing i am wondering about:
Now lore wise most drow females are clerics.....but i have never seen it mentioned which subclass they would be....

Drow are elves that live in the underdark. They deal in stealth, subterfuge, assassination, and slavery. Dont expect there to be too many heavy armor knights running around. It's unlikely you'll see much drow gear beyond chainmail if even that as drow prefer medium armor for their fighters and rangers than heavy.

Might be. I am a tad confused as to why they exist though, other than this is just the stuff drow use in general. I'm curious to see if there will be any kind of unique equipment, like if there is a special drow piece that does something special that you can't get from other pieces. For me honestly I don't find drow all that interesting, mostly cause I don't care to play an elf character all that much, less so the evil versions of drow.
I know there are drow that aren't following the evil goddess. Happy to assist them in what way I can, just not that interested in playing as them.

well there would be that legendary drow hood in the myconid colony....shadow of Menzoberranzan, and there is a special drow longsword somewhere in the underdark

Do you mean the long sword, or at least I think it was a long sword, you can find in the underdark of EA? I can't remember if I saw that in a video or actually found it, but I don't remember if it does something or if I just haven't figured out how it was used. It was neat to find it though.

While not quite what I meant but something special, a +1 in a D&D style game is a good upgrade so that is helpful. When I say something special though I'm usually meaning either giving you a spell or ability you may not have without it or something that you only can do with it equipped.
So like a special capability or spell/ability that you can use with only that drow equipment I guess is what I meant.

That is more what I was meant yes. While invisibility isn't something I myself care about since I don't care much about stealthy game play and surprise attacks, that is what I meant yes. Something that gives you a unique effect that is more of a drow equipment set. And yes I am aware that drow tend to be more stealth oriented usually.
That is why I think I'm less of a drow person as well, since I tend to favor up front tank or melee fighters or support over stealth or lighter fighters most of the time I think.

Uh pretty sure Drow plate was a thing in BG2 and there were quite a few options from which it could be obtained.

supposedly their better items (enchanted mostly but some that just use exotic materials) all degrade and fall apart under sunlight. It is good stuff if you stay in the underdark or put a perma-dark spell around it.

they disfavor heavy armor but its not unheard of.

Is that why you find mostly stuff you found in the burning village that would be of that kind of leather and things not with special effects of drow make on the surface then? I'm not much of a D&D person prior to the Baldur's Gate 3 or 5e play since I never played much table top or didn't play a lot of PC gaming prior to World of Warcraft or later outside of the RTS games that blizzard made or Command and Conquer when I was a wee younger was a teenager.

Drow items are special (in the underdark) almost without exception. Chainmail as light armor instead of chain shirts being light armor. All having some sort of enchantment of a plus on armor for AC. Weapons similarly are special, their long swords were changed to look more like curved blades, not quite scimitars, and have traits like poison, or other debilitating effects as well as pluses. They do unfortunately melt in the sunlight unless they are super special.

As for the Theocracy that rules them, yes the Drow in the underdark worship Lolth and she only accepts female clerics. Males are fighters or wizards, with society controlled by the female clerics. With there being a competing tribe of Drow, as well as a third faction devoted to the Absolute it should be very interesting. I imagine we will find some Drow weapons and such that will survive on the surface.

yes thank you for your input. Now do you have any ideas what subclasses or domain those clerics might be ? I cant really think of much that would fit them such as light or life domain for Lolths :cool_lif:

Another thing about drow magic and their gear vs sunlight....I do renember that (which is also mentioned in the lore wikis i think) drow gear and magic started to work on the surface after Liriel Baenre carved her rune into the Ydraggsil tree (Windwalker-Book series).
Truth be told i have no real clue about the lore of dnd though

'Probably' and 'guarantee' are not comparable. All you can do is speculate.

Well, technically, yes. Most female drow are Clerics, there are actually exceptions to this. The most stand-out exception being Liriel Baenre (the daughter of Gromph Baenre, Menzoberranzan's archmage) as she's a dual-class Wizard/Cleric (she started off as a Wizard under Gromph's tutelage).

But as for their subclass....I'm honestly not sure. Probably the most fitting subclass for them would be a Death or Evil domain Cleric, due to their connection to Lolth.

But in terms of armor, it's true that Drow prefer to be more nimble an agile in combat, and thus prefer Light or Medium armor rather than Heavy armor, but I could see some exceptions if the Heavy armor in question happened to be crafted out of Mithral. But otherwise, most Drow warriors tend to rely more on evasion, finesse, and parrying in combat over simply "tanking" hits while wearing Heavy armor.

Remember, Elves tend to be much more slender and less muscular than a Human or Dwarf, so heavy armor would more than likely hinder them in battle rather than aid them. Hence their preference for relying on Light or Medium armor over Heavy armor.

That naturally doesn't mean there couldn't be exceptions where some elves actually prefer using heavier armor.

However, there is certainly potential for Underdark exploration (and with the way vertical movement works in this game, the massive caverns and tunnels of the Underdark could be a perfect environment for this!), not to mention the fact that Mind Flayers (whom are very much directly involved in the main story to begin with!) primarily reside in the Underdark themselves (and are one of the few beings that even Drow fear). So there is plenty of opportunity for scenarios where you might end up involving yourself in a war between Menzoberranzan and it's neighbor, Ched Nasad. Or a direct conflict between the Mind Flayers & Menzoberranzan or Ched Nasad, and you are given the option to side with either the Mind Flayers (or they might be able to use your worm to just mind control you into helping them), Ched Nasad/Menzoberranzan, or neither (or even just be hostile to them both).
