Psion- where is it?

So, one of the big things about mind flayers is psionics- not magic, but mental and internal power that can be leveraged to do things like the mind blasts and whatnot.
Since the powers your character is using are sparked by the larvae mind flayer, why isn't there a psion class? A Soulknife? Any of the older psionic classes would be a LOT of fun in this game.
So..... Where are they?

Because they are not in the players handbook. WotC also tried to do a psionic class and it was not really functional in 5e so they went with subclasses for different classes. Can't remember all of them off the top of my head but rogues got soulknife & fighters got one as well.

There was a psionics class in unearthed arcana, which is unofficial D&D 5th edition content.

It was beyond broken.

I do not see Wizards letting Larian even touch that class.

Psionics per se don't excist in 5E so there is no psion. Some abilities are called psionic though but they're the same as a magical effect.

Tldr: Play a mage and imagine him/her to be a psionist (focus on mind spells?) - that's the closest you will get.

As stated above, Mind Flayers, Gith, etc will all be magical classes. Some will be mentalist spells though. Ciphers from PoE would be a nice compromise, but I do not see that happening. On the other hand, we are getting the high quality Larian Universe engine, not less desirable 5th edition DnD rules. They are sort of grafting on where needed. A dip back to second edition DnD which is where Forgotten Realms was invented would be most welcome, but would not help promote the sales of WoTC new money grab, and dumbing down of the rule sets.

Unfortunately the Psionic Classes (Psi Warrior, Soulknife etc) are Unearthed Arcana and are very unlikely to get in. The closest you can get to a Psion in game asides from gaining Mind Flayer powers by indulging in the Tadpole's will is the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer Subclass as one of the ways to become that Subclass is being infected by a Mind Flayer Tadpole. So here is hoping that subclass from Tasha's is added!

Soul knife is in Tasha's cauldron I think, there's a psion rogue class anyways there but the psion part is just flavour. It could be the apple pie powered rogue just as well with the same abilities being described as magical.
