Maybe having a new game IP set in Waterdeep?
Close your eyes and point to whatever and that's where you can start.
Anyway it is what it is. i just hope they make the BG 3 city map interesting with sewers that have sewer trolls and a fanatic blind cult that i need to kill!
Think of it this way, basically what they are doing is the same as if The Elderscrolls was always in the same province because the franchise name of that province is what people recognize. I like Skyrim but I would be pissed if TES VI was there again.
Tamriel is a pebble compared to Forgotten Realms heck even Middle Earth doesn't compare in terms of Lore and written material and yet we always visit the same 2 city states that are almost a carbon copy of one another.
If you guys at Larian happen to read this, maybe this should be a consideration for a DLC at least if your license permits it.
Waterdeep by itself is so big you could make an mmo around it and Undermountain but instead of opting for this very sensible choice they took Neverwinter which isn't suited for that at all because well, Neverwinter....
Luskan (Legends of the Sword Coast)
Neverwinter
Westgate (Mysteries of Westgate)
Samarach, Chult and Neverwinter (Storm Of Zehir)
Rasheman (Mask of the Betrayer)
There are oldre forgotten realms video games for all the following cities/areas:
phlan
Tilverton
Ten towns
Dragonspine mountains
Waterdeep
Yartar
Menzobarranzan
Amn
I really don't think waterdeep would do well (and it didn't the first time in eye of the beholder), it is too big as a city. I think something in the 10-towns or shadowdale or the moonsea would do well for a new PC game.
I think any area around the Sea of Fallen Stars could do as well as Calimshan and Anauroch. You could even have a game set in a different timeline like the height of the Netherese Empire the options are endless. I think the sword coast as a whole is overdone in video games and personally the only place I wouldn't mind Waterdeep is in an mmo because it has the scale for it.
Yeah your from my generation I can tell lol. All these games old had 1 thing in common, they all had the big Forgotten Realms logo on the box (TSR cared about that) and each featured a distinct location. Bethesda is doing it right with their Elderscrolls franchise but sadly I don't think anyone at WOTC has any clue about what to do with this potential gold mine they have. Now that may change when/if Hasbro gets out of the picture.
Of the newer bunch you named most were DLC from Neverwinter and didn't have the scale of a full game except for MoTB which had a pretty good rendition of Rashemen and some parts of Thay. What I mean to say is we don't need a Neverwinter Nights 3 and Baldur's Gate could have taken a turn on the bench.
