Would it be too much to ask for a Forgotten Realms game that isn't centered around Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter?
I get the you guys are banking on the IP that is Baldur's Gate but I think you underestimate the value of Forgotten Realms as a whole and it would be a much smarter way to just market these games as Forgotten Realms printed in huge letters then in smaller you put the title Baldur's Gate 3. Why? Cause if you don't do that you'll be stuck doing games in the same 2 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cities and they're not even that interesting compared to other locations in the Forgotten Realms.

I don't even see a mention of the Forgotten Realms in the logo or the promo page on Steam, I am not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at Larian for this btw it is 100% WOTC who doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ about their IP and their should have established those ground rules from the get go. Anyways doesn't look like this is gonna change any time soon so I guess Ill just have to look forward to Neverwinter Nights 3 after this game...

Take it up with Wizards of the Coast.

I would but they don't give a ♥♥♥♥. Their stance on video games using their IP's is about as bad as Disney's.

Maybe having a new game IP set in Waterdeep?

Close your eyes and point to whatever and that's where you can start.
Anyway it is what it is. i just hope they make the BG 3 city map interesting with sewers that have sewer trolls and a fanatic blind cult that i need to kill!

I could think of Waterdeep,Myth Drannor, Mithril Hall, Silvery Moon and Skull Port to name a few.

Yeah there is plenty of place that would be interesting this is a vast world with all sorts of cultures.

Think of it this way, basically what they are doing is the same as if The Elderscrolls was always in the same province because the franchise name of that province is what people recognize. I like Skyrim but I would be pissed if TES VI was there again.

Tamriel is a pebble compared to Forgotten Realms heck even Middle Earth doesn't compare in terms of Lore and written material and yet we always visit the same 2 city states that are almost a carbon copy of one another.

If you guys at Larian happen to read this, maybe this should be a consideration for a DLC at least if your license permits it.

Waterdeep by itself is so big you could make an mmo around it and Undermountain but instead of opting for this very sensible choice they took Neverwinter which isn't suited for that at all because well, Neverwinter....

There are many games based in other areas of the forgotten realms, the last five games prior to BG3 were centered in:
Luskan (Legends of the Sword Coast)
Neverwinter
Westgate (Mysteries of Westgate)
Samarach, Chult and Neverwinter (Storm Of Zehir)
Rasheman (Mask of the Betrayer)

There are oldre forgotten realms video games for all the following cities/areas:
phlan
Tilverton
Ten towns
Dragonspine mountains
Waterdeep
Yartar
Menzobarranzan
Amn

I really don't think waterdeep would do well (and it didn't the first time in eye of the beholder), it is too big as a city. I think something in the 10-towns or shadowdale or the moonsea would do well for a new PC game.

I think any area around the Sea of Fallen Stars could do as well as Calimshan and Anauroch. You could even have a game set in a different timeline like the height of the Netherese Empire the options are endless. I think the sword coast as a whole is overdone in video games and personally the only place I wouldn't mind Waterdeep is in an mmo because it has the scale for it.

Finally "Baldur's Gate 2 Shadows of Amn" takes place in Amn and has nothing to do with the city of Baldur's Gate, despite the name

Yeah your from my generation I can tell lol. All these games old had 1 thing in common, they all had the big Forgotten Realms logo on the box (TSR cared about that) and each featured a distinct location. Bethesda is doing it right with their Elderscrolls franchise but sadly I don't think anyone at WOTC has any clue about what to do with this potential gold mine they have. Now that may change when/if Hasbro gets out of the picture.

Of the newer bunch you named most were DLC from Neverwinter and didn't have the scale of a full game except for MoTB which had a pretty good rendition of Rashemen and some parts of Thay. What I mean to say is we don't need a Neverwinter Nights 3 and Baldur's Gate could have taken a turn on the bench.

Its all about name recognition. The first two Baldurs's Gate games are two of the biggest RPGs ever made for digital entertainment. Name recognition is instant advertisement for a product. For the company "suits" that are investing money to create BG3, that is an absolute must for them. This is why there are so many sequels in digital entertainment and movies. I agree with the OP that there is a huge untapped potential for the rest of the Forgotten Realms to be used, but when money is involved, for the "suits" in these companies, yes, it is too much to ask.

You mean like IWD or Baldur´s Gate II (yes I said it!)
GreyWarden506 Feb 8, 2021 @ 8:36am
I dunno...you do got a point. I played a Neverwinter game before ever knowing about Baldur's Gate and put two and two together to realize they were in the same world. It would be nice if someone managed to make a Forgotten Worlds Franchise in the same style as Elder Scrolls where they put the location after the game name. XD
