As it has lots of unique features, IMHO, I think it's unlikely to be in - maybe in a DLC
What Tespen said. We only have all of PHB classes confirmed. Anything else is not guaranteed. Same with subclasses but it looks like some modders are already making mods for more subclasses. Maybe someone will make one for Artificer.
Closest thing is a wizard / school of necromancy from PHB. They can scribe necromancy spells into their book for half cost, at lvl 2 you get lifegain when you kill an enemy, and at lvl 6 you get animate dead for free and its stronger and can target 1 more thing.
At 10 you get resistance to necrotic damage and your HP max cant be reduced. At lvl 14 you can gain control of target undead creature.
Its not a necromancer like diablo 2 or something but its the closest thing DnD has to a necromancer.
Technically any wizard subclass can pick up all the necromancy spells but necromancer adds a bit of flavor.
Why-
-The best races for the Artificer are Verdalken, Warforged, Rock-Gnome, Fire-Genasi. if half of these peoples did not make it into the game, it could not be well optimized.
-Great backgrounds for the Artificer are Clan Crafter or Izzet Engineer, people who were able to incorporate these background stories in D&D 5e but not in BG3, because some would be missing something.
-Tools! the artificer builds the magic focus himself, he uses infusions as focus, how should one give players the possibility to be able to produce so many things by himself but at the same time it says "fire barrels and items for sale like alchemy fire should be less".
-Magical Tinkering, this ability could get a little out of control.
I would be happy about the Artificer, but only with the necessary accessories.
I'd much rather htem focus on making the core classes more interesting and perhaps give them something to strife for like in some of the other crpg's we are seeing.
They arent done adding races. Not even all the PHB races are in yet.
The topic only came up with me because the PnP GM / DM doesn't want any Verdalken and war-forged ones, but one of them managed to get a Rock-Gnome Artificer.
With this logical question "Why is this not allowed?" is really exhausting.
They'd better stay with Gith as an exception and the rest is really just PHB.
So there are dragonborne, half-orcs and gnomes.
I'm almost 100% sure we are going to see more races from beyond the PHB
