Just added some details on BG3. So reposted.
No, not a Paladin. A Chaotic Good Warrior with the motto ‘I do what I want, when I want’ and ready to get into any fight with the least provocation.
Yeah, he poses himself as the wise man with advices for everything but when you do his side quest your understand maybe it's true but in the process he deny the possibility of fleeing responsability because he is afraid of it
And yes, when he reclaim that "responsability" he ... just left "her" here to travel with you again
Where Keldorn have a sense of duty, he have cleary not
It's a refreshing writing for the trope of the "wise guide"
I totaly agree on Jaheira, and I find it funny that the death of her husbdand have a sort of "released" effect on her character (obviously because in BG1 companions was not *that* developed), she is really grieving with bargain, suffer, hate, become jealous but not hateable
Few characters have as much authenticity
Anomen is more related to fantasy literature trope but yes he have - like Keldorn imo - "realistic" struggle in life (respect institutions or challenge them, wanting to be praised by your peers, respect the law or make justice yourself while "being the law", etc)
I admire your dedication to not resurrect them xD
1. Astarion
2. Shadowheart
3. Lae'zel
4. Wyll
5 Gale
Astarion is a complete and utter troll. A pithy, impish little goblin that is hardly ever a decent person but who I found endlessly entertaining. I can see why people disliked him, but I did.
Shadowheart I admit I mostly like because of my own personal theories about her character, and because I find all the memes portraying her as the party's disapproving wine-mom to be endlessly amusing. When they actually embellish her character, she may change in rank.
Lae'zel is a hardass ♥♥♥♥♥. That's... about all there is to her really. She shows a lot of signs of insecurity and inadequacy under her bluster and that's something at least. I'm pretty sure her arc will be about realizing her god-queen is a huge hypocrite and a jerk and pulling back on her bigotry and elitism. It's basic, but it tracks as characters go and it's fine.
Wyll is another who will be made or broken for me if my headcannon of him is correct. Unlike Shadowheart however, I'm pretty sure it's not. As he is, he's a braggart and very self-aggrandizing in a way that I find annoying. He could be a cool character with a bit more tho.
Gale ♥♥♥♥♥♥' sucks. He's an insufferable, pretentious know it all who is not as charming as he thinks he is. Nearly every line he utters makes me want to punch him in the neck to shut him up, and his smugness is incredibly annoying. And to top it all off, he wants to eat my hard-earned loot and refuses to tell me why? A realistic character? Sure. Likable? Not to me. The obnoxious mofo even manages to keep being smug and annoying if I KILL HIM. Seriously... ♥♥♥♥ Gale.
The rest are fine in their own ways.
1 - Astarion. I'm a sucker for flirty bastards and I find him really fun. Although he is kind of Stupid Evil. Successfully deflects with charm, which is hard to pull off.
2 - Gale. He's friendly and funny, and I think his backstory is interesting. He sounds more like a protagonist than I do. I just find him one of the more pleasant characters to be around. He does kind of seem to trust you too quickly though, but maybe that's intentional. I do get "friend who betrays you" vibes from him.
3 - Wyll. I like his attitude and that he's a higher energy sort of adventurer dude but I haven't had him in my party very much so I don't have any strong feelings yet.
4 - Shadowheart. Off the bat I did not like her, but she can warm up to you reasonably quickly, and once she trusts you I like being around her. But I also don't really like being negged by my video games, so the snark is a bit too frequent for me on this one.
4 - Lae'zel. She's mean! She is singleminded and I can respect her dedication to her goal, but talking to her is just super unpleasant, and it was VERY weird to have her be like "you WISH you could ♥♥♥♥ me" when I was very much not asking to. I'm HELPING with your goal. Maybe at high approval she respects you enough not to insult you with every breath?
Overall in games there's an issue where "evil"/selfish/neutral characters are too short-sighted and can't understand "if we DON'T randomly kill the prince for a laugh, he might help us later" or "maybe we can just BE powerful, and we don't have to flex on every orphan we pass." I think this game has that - anything "nice" or "helpful" makes you a weak idiot when it's like, no, I just know that I'm level 2 and shouldn't be starting random fights, or that having this entire encampment love me is an asset.
The voice acting and animated mannerisms (though unfinished) really blew me away though! Shadowheart and Astarion's VAs really stood out but they're all great.
I would say also an idiot, because you don't manipulate people with bragging about yourself like does Gale.
it's not a point I quoted, I moreover I don't see how he is quicker than Wyll, the only difference is past first steps, it's clear Wyll was and is obsessed by fame. By comparison Gale "eats" items.
If Gale is suspicious it would be because of graphics/facial cinematic and vocal acting, or per contrast with other companions.
Still, it's behaving quite paranoiac to anticipate that Gale is a manipulator from the start.
Your arguing: Boo.
Seriously....
Whenever this damn game is finally out, I will tell you lol. Till then....ehh
Hard agree! I felt like Inquisition companions were just my coworkers. These BG3 characters are a little rough but I get a sense that as their arcs continue I will feel closer to them.
I played as a rogue in EA, and I only did 1 playthrough, so I got nothing to compare to, except the companions, but I managed just fine playing as rogue. I enjoyed it. I will play the exact same main character again come full release :)
Are you one of those who create your character with a mind to find the best maximizing combination of race, class etc., instead of creating simply what you fancy ?
Er wut? Rogue is fine. Not the best but certainly not the worst. Ironically the "better lockpicking" thing is one of the things other classes CAN easily replace them in. High dex + the criminal background and any class can pick locks pretty easily.
I will agree rogue isn't one of the strongest classes, but I don't think "useless" is fair. They're perfectly fine and can hold their own. We don't all play games making only the most OP optimal choices.
1) blurg
2) mirkon
3) roah moonglow
4) doni
5) remira
It does not matter if he "saw it as aggression" something is or it is not. Its not about feelings or how he saw it. Because the bottom line is people get offended all the time because they have been babied all their lives.
Stop the cycle and stop being apologetic if you did not do anything wrong. Do not worry about someones feelings you just worry about if you did the right thing or did not do the right thing.
