1.) The Goblin Queen's Roast,, where the ogres almost had a taste of royal food lol.
2.) Kaedyn getting jealous of Astarion, & thinking he was going to successfully steal his girl.
3.) I liked that Karlach is a paladin,, which is what I thought she was too before it was officially a barbarian.
4.) The little references to Jon Irenicus,, Bodhi, & Sarevok.
5.) Goblin Queen becoming quite a mastermind, & obtaining another title as a future "Goblin Priestess?"
6.) Astarion learns to care,, & sorta becomes a hero.
7.) Wynari freezing the tadpole,, & later "spooning" it out was genius. 🤯
8.) Ryth-Shan & Laezel sleep together,, while Astarian is friend-zoned by Vexir lol.
9.) Wyll was such a wingman,, & helped the Drows have alone time together. (I even liked how Afira started singing coincidently when they was down by the river too.)
10.) Ryth-Shan & Vexir saying the "L" word to their significant other.
11.) The Minthara scenes where she was dead, & had to pick a new body? It was one of the most surprising moments,, & made me more interested in her character.
12.) Everybody hating Volo, yet he gives knowledgeable advice,, & does all the cooking, cleaning, & taking care of the pets too! He's so unappreciated by people,, but I noticed his value at camp. 🥰
13.) Zrathentil being such an amazing heel,, like when he resurrected Kethryn to use against Wynari. Or when teaming up with Minthara,, & later turning heel against her too lol. He was really clever,, & liked how he faked his own deaths.
14.) Shadowheart becoming a good person again, & is making amends.
15.) Last but not least,, when Wyll was joining the darkside...yet eventually turned against them! You had me going there for a second,, & thought the worst for him after all that.
I have to say, it wrote itself. When I started writing book 2, I never in a million years expected it to turn out the way it did. Zrathentil was my evil playthrough character, and I liked the concept so much that I decided I wanted to use him in book 2. Dritar was also a bit of a surprise to me. He just came out of nowhere, but I loved him instantly as the world's nastiest druid ever. His concept was all about me wanting to use the intellect devourer druid tadpole powers, but I wanted to kinda show how intellect devourers are supposed to work. The ones in BG3 are not exactly true to lore nor stats, and if a druid can turn into one, shouldn't they be able to then do as Dritar did? Besides, the whole concept seemed freaking awesome to me.
Anyway, I fully intended that the Afflicted were going to have a much bigger role, but as I started writing it, I realized that Tav was going to have to become sort of the main in book 2. There just wasn't enough material in the Underdark and Grymforge to make an entire book out of it unless I fleshed out all new characters. Besides, I thought it was appropriate that Tav be more of the MC since Tav is, of course, the default character in the game.
As for those who betrayed the Afflicted, Astarion was a no-brainer, as was Shadowheart. As for Wyll and Lae'zel and Gale, I really had to think which characters, based on their characters in the game, would actually be tempted, and most likely to fall into that temptation. Wyll seemed very desperate to get to Mizora, so I figured he'd succumb to the temptation, but he is a truly conflicted person who wants so much to be a hero. So I figured he'd go back and forth on it, feeling guilty about the betrayal. Same with Gale. (Besides, I'm not 100% sure that Gale actually IS a good guy or if he's just pretending to be one to accomplish his overall goals. So, by having him kinda sorta turn bad, but not remaining so, it leaves it open for later when we learn more about whether he truly is good or not.)
Gale dying was actually a wonderful coincidence. He literally died while I was rolling the dice and such. Then I thought, "Holy crap! That's perfect. Now I can include his whole death and resurrection dialogues from the game. Awesome!"
As for Shadowheart turning good - well, has she? Are we sure? Some datamining in the game indicates that she is actually a Selunite that Sharrans turned bad and erased her memories so she wouldn't remember. However, I'm not 100% sure about that. Still, I thought that either way, like Gale, it leaves it open for the future. Is she really good or is she still just pretending?
Going back to Wyll and Lae'zel, I will now confess that I had an alternate ending in mind partially because I knew you'd like it if the two got together, but Wyll wouldn't let me do it. The alternate was that Wyll remained with Zrathentil's group, and that would leave room for he and Lae'zel to potentially have a future romance as they traveled together. But then, as I said, Wyll wouldn't allow it. He wanted to be a hero too much. He felt too guilty, and in the end he stabbed Zrathentil in the back leaving Lae'zel all alone.
But, you never know what the future may bring. Will Lae'zel remain with Zrathentil's group? Will she rejoin the others? I mean, after all, I fully expect that once they reach Moonrise Towers, EVERYTHING may change. Who knows who will be with who once both parties meet the Absolute.
