That's just how Gale does it. Completely normal. Do you have the bone guy in your camp? He can revive your companions.

Yo, if it's the first time Gale has died, that is not going to help.
There is drawn out specified by Gale way of resurrecting him the first time he dies.
It is an achievement to boot, if I remember correctly.
